Received an email a few days ago about their new AGB compressor. Their own wording says it pays homage to the 33609, the picture in the email of the unit was red, but now on their site it looks like the image has been removed. I was just surprised to find zero buzz concerning a new comp with mention of those 5 digits....and i am sick in bed with the flu and bored...
Sounds interesting. I think there are 6 transformers in the audio path. The price is great. Now if I could just hear it in action.
"Introducing another member of the BLA product line: the AGB Compressor. An homage to the venerable Neve 33609, the AGB is a two-channel diode compressor and limiter housed in a 2U rack mount chassis. Imagine a quick, responsive, low-noise compressor with powerful control features. It does everything from smooth and easy compression to weird rhythmic clicks to funky envelope tricks. It's insanely fast and doesn't choke when you really push it. Strap it across your drum bus and smash away. Give your snare a nice, dense crack. Use it for program material. The slower attack mode is great for vocals. Whatever you use it on, you’ll find it does the job well, and without raising the noise floor. So where does our design differ from the original? For one, the signal path is a fully balanced, opamp-based circuit. While we’re using rotary potentiometers instead of stepped potentiometers, we’ve given you more control over things like input level and attack time. Like the original, the AGB uses input, interstage, and output transformers."
WOW! I can't wait to read some reviews on this. I'm hoping the regular (non-introductory) price is $1K, as I won't be able to swing this for a little while. If they managed to get the same 'vibe' as the Neve (or Vintech) then I'm sold. This would be THE affordable drum buss compressor.
EDIT: Just noticed it already says the "regular price of $995"....STOKED.
While I think the Overstayer is a great option (only going on files posted here) I still think this piece from Black Lion might fit my asthetic more when it comes to drumbuss compression..... that is... if they've managed to get a 'neve' vibe going on. The Overstayer (to my ears... again, just going on posted files) is a pretty raw, dirty, power unit that would probably see more use when I want to dirty something up, or get something more 'in your face'..., where I'm hoping this AGB unit will be a little more smooth, gushy, and warm when I want to fit something 'in the pocket'.
Grab a BLA and I'll bring my Overstayer over and we'll try 'em both out.
Well I'm pretty broke at the moment (just bought a house.... and of course that means we need new everything.... towels.... welcome mats... a thousand tubes of caulk!!, etc.)...., but I do have a birthday coming up... and there's also Christmas... so I'm hoping I'll be able to get one (AGB) in a couple months tops. I'll let you know because I would LOVE to do some kind of A/B with your Overstayer.
I'm interested in this too! Does the AGB allow limiting and comp at the same time? Would this be a handy 2 in 1 mastering tool? I would consider buying the eq rack and the AGB if it is what I may be after
