......since i have serial number 001

all i have to say is this is the best compressor i've used for mastering, and i've had ALOT of mastering compressors.

roger made the regular P3S really sing for mastering with a few control tweaks.

How is it better than the other compressor?

No better or worse bro, its just that this is the P3S adopted for mastering application, so the features, switches and available increments are geared towards that application entirely. Recall is hugely important, and for mastering - many requested different features for the unit to suit a certain workflow for the enveloping and time constants of the circuit. The P3S has been very popular for mastering work, and even though the standard unit can also be used for mastering to great results, this unit ensures the comfort zone for guys who need it and desire it. Personally, I love being able to sweep from almost nothing to 12:1. Its gotta a lot of range and seems ready for any situation.

Anyway - excellent work Roger. Can't wait to see what else you've got in store for us.

What Adam said. Sonically, the ME is identical to the P3S.
And yes, many people use the P3S in mastering tasks. This isn't hard at all since the ratio range is so wide in the 1:1 through 2:1 area.

The Elma stepped controls make recall easier though, which is important to the busy MEs.

I aslo wanted to thank all of our users who posted here!
Your support is appreciated more than you can know.

We are shooting for having the P3S ME available through Mercenary in 2011.
That will make it a whole lot easier for folks outside the US to buy them too!

What is left of this run will be available only directly from FCS.

WOW! Awesome Roger!!!! Can't wait to try out the mastering unit myself!

So far, I'm having a BLAST with the P4DMS here at the studio!!!

Hi Adam

Glad you are liking the P4DMS!

As soon as we get some production details set, we will send you a P3S ME to check out.

I think this looks really cool. My main concern is the makeup gain range. 5dB does not seem like very much makeup gain for many situations.

Good question!

Many mastering engineers require the precision that you have with 5dB makeup gain. That gives .25dB per step resolution....

If you need more gain with the standard build, an outboard preamp works very well, especially if you want to overdrive a following stage or AD converter.

However, we can build them with any gain range in any number of steps up to 24 steps of course.

We can also supply the P3S ME with several threshold ranges:
-50/+15dBu (normal range)
-15/+10dBu
-3/+25dBu

These are the most called for ranges for the threshold control.

We can also provide any reasonable GR meter range.... 0-20dB being about the largest range that is actually useful.

I'm torn between getting one of these or an API 2500 as my first analog mastering compressor! Anyone have experience with both of these units want to chime in? I have used an API 2500 before and loved it but now this thing has caught me eye. Thanks.

I sold my 2500 after getting the Foote...

I don't have the mastering version but my friend bought the mastering one after demoing mine. He also doesn't have a 2500 any more. YMMV.

So you got the P3S? The P4-DMS looks pretty killer too!

Yeah, I've had the P3S since last November (SN 0002!) and I don't think I've done a mix since then that it hasn't been on the 2-bus.

The P4 does look insanely awesome, too...

No unlink on the P3S, it's a dedicated stereo bus design.

I'm surprised more me's don't run unlinked. Quite a few I know (including myself) do. For less than a db or so of course.

Hi thermos

The P3S ME uses the sum of the channel power to generate the control voltage for the VCAs. The only way to "unlink" this type of compressor is to use one that has 2 sets of controls, aka dual mono.

That will never happen in a 1u case, and definately never at this price.
To have dual mono + stereo mastering compressor topology would require a 3u case since it would have at least 6, maybe 10, Elma switches. Maybe if we used detented pots we could squeeze into a 2u case, but those aren't good for mastering since even if you were to land on the same resistance point (impossible), it would be at 20% accuracy (tolerance) as opposed to my 1%. Then that 20% is further spread out by tempco. Those detented pots are definately worse than my 25ppm tempco resistors mounted on the Elmas, probably more like 100ppm.

These facts make the P3S ME a very good value at a very good price point IMO.

Best regards
Roger

He is right, you can do it using 2 P3S MEs of course. No linkage there.

Got one on the way! Should be here Monday, psyched to try it out.

Jdg... I'll also be using it with the MLA-2. Seems like it should be a good combo.

Roger, just wondering if it would be possible to make a stereo-only "P4-M" basically the same P4DMS circuit and in/out transformers with only 1 set of linked controls? - maybe in the same case as the P35S?

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to get a P4-DMS... just a teensy little bit out of my budget though

Thanks

Hi superwack

Hey, I understand... That P4DMS was an expensive bugger to build.
I have thought about what you are asking and I even did a full layout for it, but I am not sure it would be any less money since when you consider the stepped controls and some extra features I added it is still pretty spendy. Also pretty sure the design I did will not fit in a 1u case.

I could possibly do a "stripped down" P4S ME with an identical control setup....
Then, maybe I could squeeze it into an 11" deep 1u case. Have to think on that some more, but thanks for the question, it is a very valid one.

Best
Roger

amazing combo!

after going thru ALOT of mastering compressors years, i am finally 1000% happy.

the closet i got to 1000% happy was a pair of moddified LTD2s paired a SHMC and API2500.

the MLA2 + foote = all these things but better
