Someone just called and told me that Avid just announced at NAB they they've bought Euphonix.

This is why I derive great entertainment from all the "Avid/Digi IS OVER" threads -- as if the company is going to stay stagnant and not evolve from where they are at any given moment.

Plus did you see this part: "Avid plans to further develop an open standard protocol that greatly expands the ecosystem of compatibility between the Euphonix control surfaces and a wide range of Avid and third-party audio and video applications."

Imagine protools with eucon. All the postproduction mc5 guys will drop their DAW.. And change to.. pt

If ProTools gets Eucon, Avid / Euphonics is going to sell a gazillion of those Artist series control surfaces. This is kinda exciting.

Interesting news. Doesn't seem like technology that Avid needed. Apple may not be too happy seeing as how there are (were) partnerships with them and Apogge.

Digidesign is an all time pimping machine, and constantly growing and swallowing smaller corporations.

I think it's exciting news! I'm looking forward to see what happens, both with the current line of consoles, and what future products are planned.

Based on Digi/Avid's past behavior, I'm sure they will stop support of these devices (MC Control, MC Mix, etc, etc) for Logic, DP, Cubase, etc.

Remember Apple is their worst enemy and this year, they stopped the support of DAE under DP.

This is bad news for some of us.

I don't know about that, can you imagine the ICON controller with a layer of the System 5 underneath.

Can't really see much good coming from this myself. I expect the Euphonix intellectual property will be absorbed into the Avid/M-Audio/Digi empire and the new products that result will be either crippled or massively overpriced. I would like to be proved wrong though

I think it is a very good move from avid. I hope we, users will see even more improvements.

OTOH, that means that the chances of Mixbus getting Eucon are getting slimmer... and I mix with the latter.

Well, it's bad news because it removes yet another innovator from the market. It's good news because Euphonix has had trouble over the last few years and it's better than loosing their technology altogether. And it's good news for AVID/Protools and their users because they(we) might start to see more compatibility with the Euphonix controllers, and perhaps some of their engineering will rub off on Protools.

Though I think having fewer companies creating our tools is a pretty big negative.
