Hi Anton,
We feel that the museq will be the perfect fit for the alpha compressor. Here are a few reasons why:
- the discrete design of the gain stages of the alpha compressor has been used in the museq, too
- the complete circuitry in the museq is also a fully discrete class-A design
- with just a few exceptions (when other parts were needed), the museq uses exactly the same components as the alpha does
- this is especially true of the very expensive conductive plastic potentiometers. On the museq like on the alpha, all potentiometers are stepped, which is of course perfect for mastering
- with its boost and cut mode switches, the alphas gain pots offer twice the number of settings than you'd have on a pot with cut and boost combined
- an additional "Fine" switch divides the range of the gain pots by two and makes even more precise settings possible
- last but not least comes the sound quality: it is as pristine as you'd expect it from the alpha.
I am not saying that the museq is a mastering-only product, though. On the contrary, during our many tests we found that especially some more extreme settings you'd make in recording/mixing depend on a very good signal path, as here the differences become even more audible. Just recently we had the cool opportunity to listen to the museq plus eight (!) other high end analog EQs in a very nice listening situation for comparison, and the results were very convincing. So yes, you'll also love it for tracking etc. by all means!
If you really need to have a five band fully parametric, the museq might not be the right tool. But if you are looking for a musical sounding EQ that really gives you a grip on your signal and very fast results at the same time, there you are.
We presented the museq as a prototype at the AES. At the moment, we are sending it to some studios to have additional opinions and maybe some final fine-tuning. It is going to be released at the Musikmesse in March 09 and will be shipping at this point straight away.
Thanks & all the best,
Dominik
