That will/can/probably make quite a bit of difference between say a production unit non-NOS and an NOS tubed unit.
Yes.... VERY good question. I am thinking of picking one of these up as well but if it comes with some off the shelf tubes I might think twice.... I guess we will see.

You guys realize that the tubes Peter is using in the unit I have are available and pretty cheap? It's not really that big a deal.

Hammer vs. UAD PEQ

I just created a new three with three clips. The one called "MIX" is the original version of the song without any EQ processing. The "A" and "B" versions are processed with the either the Hammer or the UAD Precision EQ plugin. I'm not going to tell you which is which just yet though. That wouldn't be any fun. Using the Hammer to get a sound I liked I boosted +2 at 10k, +2 at 1.6k, +3 at 30, and engaged the high pass filter. I then tried to match the settings using the UAD Precision EQ. Two questions:

Which of the two EQ'd versions do you prefer?

Which do you think is the Hammer and which do you think is the UAD plugin?

I listened to those samples on the pole.
The song sucks but the sound of the hammer is more than OK to me.
I am not a mastering expert so I can only judge on what my ears are telling me.
But in my opinion you can hear the tipical tuby sound of the hammer versus the still flat UAD version.
The hammer brings a more clear and detailled sound into the original mix.
something the UAD without real tubes can't give.
Seems they've done a realy good job there.
Anyone comes up with more samples.
Perhaps in combi with a solid state pre.

Got to quote myself this time.
Forgot to tell what I think the hammer version is.
I say it is version A
The B version has got a more boomy low in it.
The A version becomes here a little bit softer.

Thanks for your comments, Paul. Don't forget to cast your vote at the poll!

I chose that song because there was a lot going on across the whole frequency spectrum and the mix badly needed some EQ across it to make it sound less dull.

OK Brad, I've voted right away.
Allthough it's not my kind of composition yes indeed there is a lot of going on.
I will look out to see if I was right.

Thanks Brad.....

So two questions...

1) Why did the other thread get locked? I was really digging that one.

2) I have to be honest, I wasn't able to listen to the clips on the other thread.

That said it seems like the voting was pretty split and it also seems that you were even thinking that the hardware was not $2000 or so better than the plug in?

Just how it looked from the outside. As I said I was having trouble downloading the clips, wish I could have heard them (wav files and my firewall are not playing nice together and I just have not had time to work on the firewall config).

1. I closed the voting for the poll because what's the point after the answers are posted.

2. I should clarify some of the things I said. In general my litmus test for adding hardware to my rack is: does this piece of gear do something for me that is unique and exciting and not easily duplicated by any of my existing tools? In general it can be difficult to rationalize spending a lot of money on gear when you have a mortgage, a family, and other important expenses. When you don't have a lot of cash you need to buy gear that's going to give you capabilities that you feel are one of a kind, extremely versatile, or just sonically amazing. If a piece of gear meets more than one of those criteria then I find it passes my litmus test and is worth the expense. I think in the case of the Hammer it actually meets all three of those criteria!!! And it's easy as nuts to use. I've said this in many other threads--I don't often get excited about equalizers. But the Hammer has me excited. And it's something I intend to save money for and eventually purchase.

I hope that clarifies. I apologize if I gave anyone the wrong impression.

The bottom line is if you are a software guy that thinks that plugin EQ's can get you close enough, you owe it to yourself to audition a Hammer. I think you'll be equally blown away.

Brad

FYI

If anyone wants to hear a pretty substantial 10k boost on a mix run thru a HAMMER compared to a 10k boost done to the same mix using a EM-PEQ - check out this thread

10 kHz boost - HAMMER vs EM-PEQ

no shelf?

Do you think this would make a good mids-highs "enhancer" for mastering? - in conjunction with another e.q. providing the neccessary corrective cuts.
also - why no shelving? if one cranks plenty of boost, this is quite non-linear with the fixed bell curve. any reason for this?

Mids, yes definitely. Some think the highs are a little obtrusive character wise for mastering, which actually I find I prefer my Sontec usually for its more transparent thing on the highs when mastering. The Hammer mids are amazing though, I love them for mastering. I also use the low band in conjunction with my Sontec shelf to add roundness.

The q is so broad, you don't really feel the need for a shelf feature with the Hammer. Thats just me though.

I definitely think the Hammer can be for mastering , everyday I see more and more mastering engineers in search for a box that can give them character or Mojo...and sure the Hammer can deliver that with really great sound!

I finaly got my Hammer last week and i like everything about it, including the low's. This eq is soooo slick, I see no reason at all why it wouldnt be usefull in mastering.

Here for the gear

Hi guys,
your comments are very useful!

I have a question: if you have to choose between the Hammer
and the Avalon 747, what would you choose?

I need an EQ for tracking/sweetening synths/voices for electronic music.
The comments on both units are great (regarding the eq section,
in the case of the Avalon), and they seem to be at the same level.

The Hammer seems to sound a little better, but the Avalon
is easier to use (I don't have to match the two channels, as I read
that the Hammer is dual mono and not stepped).

Anyone has used them both? Any comments?

Thanks!

Its not too hard to match the sides with the Hammer. The pots aren't perfect, but they are close enough to match by ear. If you really want to get anal, you can send a test tone through it and match it that way (thats what I do when I master with it).
