Be warned that it will not be a clone, but a "re-imagined" version taking advantage of the computer screen, hence a more graphical approach.
Anyway, more to come later, but do not hesitate to share the precise "magic" traits that you liked, so I can make sure I address those!
Hi
Thanks for the quick reply, love the progress your making and totally appreciate the amount of knowledge and skill needed to accomplish this ( FAAAAAR more than I could ever do )
Specifically for me the time sig options of auto correct/note repeat ( if I recall correctly its been many years) I will search for an example and post here

Regarding pads, having 8 on screen is a good compromise in term of UI, and lends itself nicely to multimodes. I would like to keep it an horizontal line with faders above, so a MPC-type grid is not an option (for now).
That does not mean all samples (from multiple banks, potentially unlimited) could not be actioned using the keyboard or with midi notes.
Very cool!

Thanks for considering

Functionalities are the same as the online webapp, and it can be dynamically resized to suit your desktop layout.

Feedback welcome!

Really enjoying the sound this produces. The inclusion of the 33rpm played at 45rpm is wonderful.

Really excited to see how future versions develop.

Thank you!

Version 0.3.0 is online: https://rephase.org/sp12k

Most notable update is the inclusion of a channel mixer tab with an emulation of the S950 low-pass filter.

Thomas, is it possible to have a Volume separated from the Channel? Not sure how the original beast work but I'd assume that you can set different volumes to samples that are in the same channel for muting purposes....

What do you think about adding "pitch range" dropdown under the Setup, where you could globally switch from default range (+/-8 semitones) to +/-16 or +/-32?
I find myself going into Inspector every session and manually extending the pitch range

Yes this is the way the original works, using the sliders.
The Channel mixer has to be seen as an external mixer/effect.

I intend to replicate the original behavior by adding an option to switch the sliders between tune and volume mode.
I would also like to add a slice mode (which was not part of the original SP workflow) for temporal sample slicing (eg 1/8 to 8/8).
Then you will have an option to replicate a given sample on each of the 8 pads with any of these slider modes, with slider values equally spread from pad 1 to 8 as a default.
That will let you either find a melody (tune mode), do volume effects (volume mode) or rework a beat loop (slice mode).

Done, thanks for the suggestion!

The ranges are in the set-up tab.
(I also added some more low bitdepth options, because why not...)

The original SP had three tune modes: -8/7, -16/-1 and 0/15.
Here I settled with the ranges you suggested.

I would like to improve on the default sounds, so far selected pretty randomly on freewavesamples.com
Any suggestion?

This is 100% better than the low hiss beta I just tried

Can you update the desktop beta to the latest version?

Low hiss already had an update overnight to fix some bugs so that's great and has lessened a lot of concerns.

So far *workflow (too early for the sp12k to give 100% opinion but I like that you're not stuck in the 90s), latency, gui, chrome browser requirement.

version 0.3.3 is online:

- new kick/snare/hi-hat samples, as well as piano and bass loops
- mono/stereo sample option in the set-up tab

I will try to compile a stand-alone version tonight

Filters sounding good. Is there going to be a resonant option in the future?

Interesting. How about sound & faithful emulation?

I think the SP12k sounds light years better than others I’ve heard...

Curious if LowHiss stands up.

(I’ll be trying it myself regardless, but curious on your thoughts.)

I'm really impressed so far, sounds very good ( filters, pitch, everything ). Nice GUI.

Would really love to see this as a VST plugin.

I've never owned one, but I do know its signature especially on the amen break.

If anything can get close I think Sp12k is there right in the ballpark. Low hiss is too buggy so far, lets hope it gets better but the chrome browser thing is yuck.

Version 0.3.4 is online: https://rephase.org/sp12k

- space bar now act as a "panic" button, stopping all sound. The old behavior of that key was to play the pad of the strip the mouse cursor was hovering.
- balance knob in the Channels tab

This is an emulation of the 6th order Butterworth filter of the Akai S900/S950.

I could add a resonant version as well if that makes sense in the workflow.
Any specific implementation/device you would like to see emulated here?
I don't want to cause confusion by adding multiple complicated options either.

A plugin is in the making, but it will be an effect plugin: no pad, no sequencer, just the SP1200 detune and S950 filter.

First post will be kept up-to-date with a list of currently implemented and future features, as well as links to the last version.

I am also thinking about changing the name, as SP12k might be too close to the trademarks SP12/SP1200.
What do you think about SP900 or SP950 to remaind of the S900/S950 filter, or maybe SP2k?

A single pad/cell instrument VST would be the killer here, you could build up your own unlimited drum machine then with as many instances as you like.

Aye, no need to get complex
