Sounds like Elysia's Gain Reduction Limiter

I thought this was one product - but it sounds like two? If so, how is the feature list split between the two products? Or do both have the same feature list except one is for mastering and has small differences?

Looking forward to seeing pics!

For the firmware expansion packs on the buss compressor, is that something we have to pay extra for?

Let me get this strait, the firmware is just utilizing different hardware settings built into the unit? So we're paying more money to just unlock different hardware features that are built into the unit? I'm not sure I can get on board for this.

People pay for upgraded plugins all the time. How is this an issue. You are free to NOT buy the extras and therefore pay less.

Yes, you have the basic version at the beginning and then you can decide what functionality you would like to add (or not if you do not need it). If you would like to have all the functionality form the get go, then just aim for the Mastering Compressor which is fully featured.

I hate to be negative, but it feels like they've built a nice unit and then gimped it to make you pay more money.

The pricing of the expansion packs is also quite high IMO. You can buy a LOT of plugins for the €170 that each Bettermaker expansion costs. Furthermore, many of the extra-cost features appear to be relatively simple - EQ and filters, M/S or a mix control aren't difficult in DSP, and you've already bought the hardware to do it...

The new units don't appear to be that cheap and Bettermaker themselves sell a 500-series compressor with a lot of these features included for a lot less. There's a lot of competition in this market now too. YMMV etc.

This isn't a plugin, it's a physical unit that costs over $1000. On top of paying for the unit, each expansion pack is basically the price of a nicer plugin. This is very different, this is an expensive, tangible product that is being intentionally crippled until you pay "more" for it.

Maybe I'm starting to get old, but this just seems silly to me. I guess there's nothing wrong with likening this to how the software market is going, unfortunately I would't be buying into it. Again, it might just be me acting "old fashion", but it just seems disrespectful to customers. I'm sorry for being so blunt and negative, I just don't understand it...

I agree - there's a different vibe between selling hardware that's missing functions that you can buy and install at a later date such as Vertigo's mix satellite, where they sell the full function version and the cut down one without the distortion ability, which you can buy and install later on, and selling hardware that has all the functions but they've been intentionally locked up until you pay more to get the unlock codes.

Thankfully I don't see much hardware going this route because hardware is still hardware. The bettermaker stuff has their hardware so computer controlled that it's probably akin to having an OS controlling everything so that's why they can do this. Most hardware designs don't have this ability as they're strictly hardware or have computer aided control (like manipulating the sidechain in a compressor).

That said, even though I have zero interest in the bus compressor because of this situation, the mastering compressor does look very nice (and fully functional!) with a ton of fine control. It actually kind of reminds me of the Elysia Alpha, to be honest in a lot of the features. I'm excited to see more of the mastering compressor.
