Heritage Audio Announces the New SUCCESSOR Bus Compressor

Why would you settle with sterile VCAs in your mix or instrument bus duties now that the Successor is available?

Traditionally bus compression has been taken care of by VCA style devices, based on ICs, which are wholly unrelated to the warmth, fatness and the character associated with discrete Class A technology, including chunky transformers and diode bridge-based gain reduction.
Why do companies feel the need to do this, it just puts me off their new product big time.

A VCA bus compressor (which I often use) is great for creating an exciting and precisely controllable envelope that also glues elements together when one already has enough "warmth" in the mix and a mix simply doesn't need any more hair on it.

I'm sure this new DB bridge bus comp is absolutely fab, but let it stand on it's own merit without feeling the need to trump one of the other "industry standard" Ace cards a player can hold in their hand.

I'm sure Thomann will have them at some point.

so,
"bus" or "buss"?
Because I always thought the second but now that I look at the API2500 sitting next to me, it says "bus"

edit: nevermind

This indeed is a nice unit, and well thought out. I guess the only way it could be a mono 500 series is if it was 2 spaces wide, too many knobs for a single space.

Yeah, exactly the same seems impossible. Maybe reducing the attack release and ratio pots by a three positions toggle, same with the scf, 160hp 2kpeak and 5khp, something like that.

The price of this one at my local store is quite nice, I like 1U stereo rack pieces and this will sound different than my VCA/MUs, tempting.

The side-chain options seem like a real step foward and useful for workflow. Wes Audio also have similar side-chain profiles on the _DIONE bus comp.

Yes, there's a reason transformers are used, beyond the sound. I guess implementing electronically-balanced outputs will change more than just the output character - and add to the expense.

The BAC500 is great on vocals for this reason. I’d love to have a 33609-style comp with similar de-essing. I like Heritage preamps so i have high hopes for this.

You could use them sterile VCAs then. ;-)

No, seriously, I have to point out also that i don't like this kind of marketing. A company liek Heritage specially should not have to do this. Anyway, looks like a great product.

If it’s based on the 33609 does that mean it has 3 transformers on each channel?

And what type of make up gain stage does it have?

I believe is a diode ---- with fet a like sounds because of ultra-fast attack with 73 output stage, so Neve vintage colour and very versatile, could be cool a video-demo to see and hear it in action, don´t understand how heritage still didn´t make some drum loop squash in youtube

I know there is no unit in the wild of this compressor, but what do you think about using it for tracking electronic percussive material?
do you think it would be another use for this buss compressor à la API 2500?

No reason why it shouldn't work. But guesswork as long as nobody heard this for real.
