Klevgrand releases DAW Cassette - Tape Emulation

After the huge user response to Klevgränd’s web app experiment Web Cassette (WEBCASSETTE), they've created a plugin version.

DAW Cassette is based on the same algorithms and brings back the magic era of the 1980's by emulating the sound of a tape deck inside a DAW. Saturation, distortion, noise, wobble, it's all there.

Features
• Reduce tape quality, head quality and motor quality to age your sound
• Choose metal, chrome or normal tape options
• Switch in Dolby A and Dolby K weighting
• Adjust input gain, output gain and dry/wet mix
• Dial in flanging sounds by reducing the motor quality and dry/wet mix together

Pricing
AU/VST/AAX $19.99 (Until May 7, then $39.99)
iOS (AUv3 only) $7.99 (38% off intro price until May 7)

Awesome, just awesome. Forget subtle, or mild compression, or slight head-bump, or anything we're used to from normal tape plugins. This is full on destruction (although it does go pretty clean with the metal setting and backing off the input). So much fun.

Agreed with all the above, many flavours to be had, perfect for roughing up sounds.

My only request is that instead of Output L+R meters just have one for input and one for output.

Other than that lofi rock on

One issue I have faced is at various stages the wet/dry knob will cause phasing artifacts.

It’s a tape deck from south of the equator.

Gotta try this. I'm tired of subtle.

The Klevgrand is waaaaaaaaaaaay more destructive and obvious. I really wanted to like the Fuse one as I love their bitbucket delay, but it didn't do it for me... probably too subtle! This one you can rough stuff up big time and then roll it back with the mix dial until it's just right.

Plus it has spinning dials. SPINNING DIALS!!!!

The fuse one is subtle, unless you go silly with the clipping. A different beast, but I have to say I really like how the clip reacts to drums, especially kick.

This one here is also good in that regards but a different break up which is equally nice but warrants owning both..

How does this compare to RC-20?

With motor instability you should get phasing. What is essentially an EQ in parallel will also always do this to some extent, but no serious problems here.

This is a great tape flavor that hasn't really been available ITB before. It is fantastic on bass guitar - instant buy. I like the frequency response with the Dolby in the "Off" position but there sure is a lot of noise.

I know developers take great pride in making authentic emulations. But this is also a modern saturation tool that people will use as such. So an option to disable the noise would be very welcome. Var snäll och ge oss det Brusfri alternativet i DAW Cassette

Oh that's just not true. Too much sun for me yesterday.
But if we're facing at the a-side we're listening to the b-side (I think, I'm not sure anymore)

When I tried the web version, I recorded the output and put a NS-1 from Waves on it. While not perfect, it removes a good amount of noise. But I did not try it with all the settings and don't remember the setting I used in Cassette.

Dolby K disables the noise according to the manual.

Yes. I was hoping to be able to use the "Dolby Off" setting which has a different kind of sound than Dolby K but no way to stop the noise.

True, but it would be great with the option of 'no noice' with Dolby in off position.

Dolby 'kills' frequencies. Sometimes you don't want that.

I only tried the web one of this so far so can't compare properly compare the two. Just want to give my take on the Fuse TCS-68 as it differs. I don't find it subtle at all, you don't have to push it much to hear the effect and if it's really pushed it's anything but subtle, can distort and compress things in a really interesting way. I love the TCS-68, been using it a lot this past month.

Going by what I remember from the online version of this, they aren't all that comparable even tho both are related to cassette, very different processors.

Have to agree with your spinning dials comment this one has that covered!

I'm not hearing what you're hearing, I assumed that the Dolby setting only affected the noise.

What's strange though is that raising the input level also increases the noise. So I guess they're emulating the noise in the electronics and not the tape? (but how would Dolby help with that...)

...
In an ideal senario that is, but not in real life.

When we recorded with real cassettes back then,
(or with reel-tape for that matter)
noise was an issue, so we used Dolby to tame that noise.
But Dolby was avoided lots of times, unless really needed.

When you killed the noise with Dolby,
you also killed part of the higher frequencies in the music.
It was always a question about fine-balancing though ...
