Magpha is a very clean digital EQ while Azure is based on sampled snapshots of a passive tube based analog EQ which is rather limited from a pure technical standpoint, but adds a certain color.
So, apple and oranges I would say.

Magpha v2.0.0 update – Shelves, AAX & more

Hi all, thank you for your patience on the latest update. It is now ready.

Main updates are high and low shelving bands (with extended frequency ranges) and AAX for ProTools users.

---

Here are the full details...

v2.0.0

- Add high/low shelves with extended frequency ranges.
- Add new presets for shelving.
- Allow keyboard entry of 'k' frequencies e.g. '6.3k' converts to '6300'.
- Optional double +/- 18dB gain range suitable for mixing.
- Improved fix to zero-latency on bypass with some DAWs.
- Bypass buttons now display e.g. "Off" when off.

v1.3.0

- AAX version for ProTools users.

---

New users download demo here:

Existing users (demo or purchase), please check your email for the direct link.

---

I really want to thank everybody who's contacted with support and suggestions. Many ideas have made it in to this version and the product is better for it.

Also thanks to all who attended my technical presentation at the Milan AES event.

John.

Thanks a lot for the free update. I would have paid for it.

Would you consider to add Hi and Lo pass filters and a mono version for mixing tasks?

I just installed 2.0.1
It is showing as a Demo version ...... I have owned it since early release.
Any ideas ?

cheers

UPDATE: I see what happened.
I received 2 emails, one from John and one from Eleanor.
I clicked on the link in Eleanor's email and it was for a demo.
The link in John's email was the correct owner update link.

Phew :-)

Wonderful update, thank you John!

The only thing missing on that gui now, is a switch in the empty space where there are no q knobs, to change the shelves to cut filters

I also think with HPF and LPF this could be considered complete!

Hi all, thanks again for the support.

Apologies to the paid customers who also received demo mail alerts.

RE: HPF LPF

I have plans to make a separate plugin for HPF (with Q bump and separate side cut).

Not an LPF though. Occasionally I'll use a gentle shelf downwards in the highs or a peak at Nyquist, but never an LPF.

Interested to know:

Do people here use LPFs in mastering? If so, how?

Sometimes a 6dB LPF at high freq (18-25k) or sometimes even lower freq in the S-channel only. So I wouldnt underrate a good smooth LPF for mastering. But mostly Im happy with a slow shelv here if needed.

I use the LPF on the Bax EQ very often in mastering, but never lower than 18k, it’s usally set to off, 70k or 28k. 18k is very audible but just the ticket on many modern mixes if the client is after more ‘analogue’ feel. The higher settings are more to get the ultrasonic hash out of the way before the ADC.

Most probably don't, but this is not a mastering (only) eq anymore

People want to mix with it!

I like this plugin, but I think it has a high price. In promotion are more than 90 euros with the currency exchange. Azure with coupons can be obtained for 118 euros and Azure is more versatile. It can be transparent or you can activate the preamplifier and it becomes dirty.

If it had a more competitive price, I think it would have more sales.

Take the comment as a constructive criticism. Not like an attack.

Thanks for your comment. No worries, I don't take it as an attack. I feel that negative comments are good information, especially when the reason is explained well, like you have done.

We're very happy with sales and have sold much more than expected. I have been surprised that so many engineers appreciate the sound we've created in Magpha. I was expecting it to be more niche.

Acustica Azure looks like a great plugin. And if you prefer the sound/versatility of it you should go for it instead.

For me, Magpha is a different plugin with a different sound. It's designed to showcase the sound of the research I have done on filter design. The new technique in the research was presented/published at the May AES event in Milan (the paper is here)

Interesting that you should mention Azure. At the Milan AES, I had an extended chat with Giancarlo from Acustica about my new method, I explained how it worked and that I was presenting the next day. When he understood the method he seemed very interested, particularly about the latency reduction. Then said, 'Why? Are you looking for a job?'!

I don't find Azure more flexible, despite having cut filters, I'd pick Magpha over it any day (both because of sound and functionality). In fact for quite some time Azure sits unused in my plugin folder, while Magpha is used in every single project here. Adding those filters would definitely make it a desert island eq plugin.

Nope, because it doesn't have HPF and LPF. I will re-demo if it ever does.

I'm afraid Magpha won't have HPF or LPF. I'm currently creating a separate filters plugin.

The are a few reasons for this:
- Personally I prefer to be able to move my filters around the chain separate from my EQ, and vice-versa.
- I like to know that the filters are filters and the EQ is an EQ when I glance at the plugin chain list. (These first two are the main reasons)
- Magpha interface is already quite full and I prefer not to have multi-function bands.
- I want to put in more features than a standard filter set (so this definitely wouldn't fit into the Magpha interface) e.g. separate mid/side controls as standard and a few other things.

P.s. As a side note, I totally don't mind if you prefer working with the Tokyo Dawn EQ! I use TDR stuff myself very often still e.g. Nova and Kotel. I firmly believe that all tools yield a different sound (through interface/workflow as well as DSP), so the more good tools out there, the better

v2.1.1 UPDATE – Fade knobs / Mono / Quarter dB

Also, I don't think I alerted here with the next version.

Mainly added is faded knobs when bypassed, mono track compatibility (e.g. Logic/Protools etc.) and quarter dB steps option.

  • Now mono track compatible.
  • Fade knobs when band is off.
  • Option for quarter dB steps (half dB when double gain enabled).
  • Fix double gain range clipping to +/-9dB on project reload.
  • Fix raised CPU usage when playback stopped.

Paid and existing demo users check your email for the link.

New users just head to the main page to download:
Balance Analog Magpha EQ plugin. — Balance Mastering

Thanks again,
John & Eleanor.

last time I demo'd this plugin I didn't really listen closely and regret I missed the intro price

Really like this EQ but a bit hestitant regarding the price. Must think about it. I guess there will be no sale any time soon?

ok, since this seems like the best ITB eq on the market (I have all TDR Eq's etc but prefer the sound of Magpha), I had to buy it!

Weird that we haven't read anything by John in many months

I love Magpha and think it's the best itb I know (Not a Equilibrium owner...).

Just wish he'd be here to read that I would love a "save as default" preset to set the quarter/half dB steps as default....

Could ya not just do that as the default preset in the DAW?

Sure I could, but surely nicer if it's there with a double click

We do Black Friday in the UK. It's the mass hysteria surrounding it that's more of a yankee thing.
