Waves releases Scheps Omni Channel Plug-In

Waves releases Scheps Omni Channel Plug-In

Designed with Grammy-winning mixer Andrew Scheps (Adele, Jay Z, Metallica), this flexible channel strip delivers Andrew’s time-tested combinations of compression, EQ, saturation colors and more – all crafted to work together beautifully and cohesively.

Channel strips are the mixing world’s most efficient tools, providing all your basic processing – EQ, compression, gating, and often more – in one modular, easy-to-manage unit.

Mixers choosing which channel strip to work with often face a dilemma, however: Channel strip plugins based on vintage mixing consoles can sound amazing, but tend to tie you down to a very specific and limited sonic color. Modular channel strip plugins let you mix and match diverse processors with flexibility, but the different processors might not work together cohesively and won’t necessarily interact as a true channel strip.

Scheps Omni Channel gives you the best of both worlds. Through years of mixing diverse music genres, Andrew Scheps has perfected certain combinations of go-to processors – some based on classic hardware units, some being innovative modules developed from scratch – each with its own unique character. They are all now provided to you in one flexible yet fully cohesive channel strip plugin.

Scheps Omni Channel features five modules that you can use in any order you like:

The Pre module provides three types of analog saturation, letting you add diverse colors of harmonic distortion as well as filters and thump (resonance) controls. The Compression module features 3 completely different compressors ranging from fast to slow and smooth, with a unified control set so you can quickly compare them. A Wet/Dry control allows you to parallel compress within the module. The EQ module is a 4-band equalizer; each band providing a distinct musical sound that holds up on its own or can be switched to fully parametric if surgical EQ is required. The DS2 module is so much more than a de-esser, with two full-range bands and four filter types allowing it to ‘de-anything’ – remove any offending frequencies, not just S’s or T’s.The Gate module gives you all the standard controls (threshold, attack and release) for gating/expansion, but also lets you adjust the maximum noise reduction to maintain a consistent noise floor. If that’s not enough, Scheps Omni Channel features an insert slot that can be positioned anywhere in the chain, where you can insert an additional Waves plugin of your choice, including an extra instance of any of the Scheps Omni Channel modules. For live sound, Scheps Omni Channel offers zero latency and full discrete control over each stereo channel. Select controls of the compressor, EQ and filters are mapped conveniently to the eMotion LV1 live mixing console, serving as the console’s channel strip.

Finally, you get a set of ‘Focus’ presets, created for different sources, which highlight the most important controls you should be focusing on to achieve your current task.

No matter what musical genre you are working with, Scheps Omni Channel will help you stay focused while you mix, quickly audition sonic characters with just a few clicks, customize your signal flow easily in one interface, and be confident that the sounds you fashion ‘sit’ together beautifully and cohesively.

At 49???? Just imagine starting out in Audio now. For example being a young cat in a band recording at home.
Assuming the presets are usable, good quality demos were never easier to achieve.

Looking good there Waves.

In haven't liked much of anything from waves except the Redd channel strip. When they can get rid of that smeary, plastic sound I'll give them another go. Maybe this will do it. I wish I had all these tools when I first starting at 15

Checking this out tonight. Just told myself I was done with Waves for now. Dammit. I kinda wish these plugins had actual physical weight and girth - that way they'd take up room in my studio and encourage me to close my wallet for awhile. The producers reco'ing it - makes this very tempting.

I wonder what the CPU useage is on this thing.

Hopefully its not basic Waves eq, comp, gate, etc which was redone 500 times just in different GUI. I am waiting for some honest reviews and feedbacks first...

My thoughts exactly, was thinking about actually selling some of my waves stuff now that I'm more invested in UAD. That said, may have to shell for this one :/

I am usually put off by these gimmicky sponsored plugins, but I must say that this does look interesting.

I hear you, the most tacky aspect of this is Andrew's logo which reminds me of the dreaded dinosaur. But if it sounds like I'm hoping, then nothing else matters.

I'm less interested about preset. I have never used one and I will never use for years to come. I like to do my own thing. Everybody's test is different and I don't like to print somebodies preset in my mix. If I'm given the veggies, beef and the sauce to cook a food, I will do it myself. I hate preset they will never work. They never worked for me. They are like fast food they make you bulk and take space. I will try it out. From what I heard while they are tweaking on infomercial video they sound awesome. Time to play with this toy.

Welle, I find the combination of the different elements (preamp saturation, dynamic filters, comp, eq, tone-eq and limiter) a very sensible offering. It justifies the price in itself. I watched the video demo on waves'website and it sounded good to me, a good combination of processors in an elegant gui...

The flexibility looks like the real selling point. Some good ideas. Hope it sounds good.

Yes at least it doesn't get bulky like Slate VMR and you will never know what you put inside. This one, You are quite sure that it is a channel strip.

Thumbs up

@ studios aturn - Agreed about this vs. VMR, except for the fact that you can place one Waves plugin into this shell and arrange it with the other modules. That could get a little confusing. But despite that, it's nice to have that option!

I think the fact that it is zero latency is great. Also the limiter that doesn't increase volume as you lower threshold, very thoughtful.
If it is low-cpu enough to use as a standard plugin on every channel, might be very convenient.

I'm trying it now on a lead vocal. It sounds pretty legit. All of the processes sound really good, especially the saturation and compressor. I'm trying to be objective here but it seems that this strips biggest advantage is the ability to get 90% where you want to be extremely quickly, as is with most channel strips. This one just seems to do it with less effort than most. I doubt I'll be able to resit the temptation to purchase pretty quickly.

Huge kudos to Waves

Zero latency. Enormous flexibility in the terms of M/S processing and frequency sculpting. Since coded by Waves, it won't crash in the heat of the action. Wonderful low-profile no bull**** GUI.

IMHO, this seems to be pretty much the best channel strip thing we're going to see anytime in the foreseeable future.

Humble big thanks Waves

Here for the gear
I have a big issue with the latest v9.92 incorporating the Scheps Omni channel: 60-70 % of the waves plugins failed to validate under Logic 10.3.3 ! Never happened to me before...Does anybody have that problem ?

Waves is more flexible, 3 different compressors, Deesser and host for all waves plugins you have. However EQ is better on Brainworx by far.
There seems to be RenEQ + RenDeesser algos used for EQ and DS section
