How does this compare to other compressors?

What about the quality of components?

Anyone else build kits from the vendor? If so, how do you rate them?

If the transformers option is selected, is there a switch for transformerless vs transformers operation?

I won't be able to tell you about quality first hand since I haven't yet build/bought any of Gustavs projects but... I will be buying a kit next month. Haven't yet decided which one it will be though. With that being said.. Gustav seems to be highly regarded on the DIY-circuit (pun intended) and to my knowledge these are high quality pieces. I've browsed around quite a bit and I saw a guy buy the entire line in a thread... Tell me about Munson Fletcher

I also believe Gustav has some sort of collaboration with Jakob Erland of Gyraf Audio. Anyhow.. I'm very intrigued by these designs and I think the PQD2 seems to be great! Although.. Today (changes from day to day) I think my first PCB-Grinder kit will be the MS-HOL but.. We'll see

Gustav is also very open about the projects on the Group DIY-page where discussions about schematics, errata etc are frequent.

Nice guy,
great kits.
Quality is good, but as with anything, you could encounter a faulty component.
And if you want boutique parts, you'll usually have to sort that out yourself.

He's not an electronic wizard though,
so don't count on him for troubleshooting your builds.
But been doing this for a long time his quite competent.
Never heard a bad word about him.

I am always prepared to offer trouble shooting assistance by mail, within "reasonable" limits, and to be honest, I am human, so sometimes I will often dig in more if I have free time, refer to the forum if I dont.

Theres also a matter of communication style - sometimes I just won't "get" what a person is trying to say, and in general, its better to use the forums, so everyone benefits, and everyone can help.

I am always prepared to trouble shoot a unit on my bench if you are prepared to pay for shipping and bench time. I designed these circuits, so of course, I can always find any errors on these circuits with a scope and meter in hand.

And I have a list of people that are willing to do the same in various countries on the site.

Cheers!

Thanks so much for the support

Wouldnt wait a month for the MSHOL - Vactrol stock is getting low, and to be honest, I think I'd make more selling the Vactrols as separate parts than I do selling a kit at this point.

For balanced operation, I would go with one or the other, but you can implement a switch if you find the concept useful. The PCB footprint is either or, so it would take some off-board fiddling.

If you mean transformer balanced vs unbalanced, its not difficult to wire up a switch.

That is what I meant.

The reason I ask is that Stam's SSL 4000 clone has the option of adding transformers, but includes a switch to still have the option of transformerless, for a more transparent sound -- like for mastering.

Gustav,

You have other compressors that are:

- LA'ish
- 1176'ish
- 4000'ish

How would you categorize this new one?

Its a VCA comp, so more 4000ish than LA or 76ish.

My mail is [email protected], if you have questions

I stand corrected
Glad you're able to offer such service.
