Interesting.
Live loudness adjustment is kind of the "holy grail" for live broadcasting, however it also seems impossible because a short duration of loud sound (applause for example) can be a conscious choice by the mixing engineer. An algorithm can never know this, so most loudness adjustment algorithms (e.g. TC electronics) lead to unwanted jumps in volume.
I would love to try it but have no way to run live audio (reliably) through a windows VST host.

You can use it with recorded audio as well, in a DAW or wave-editor

And, besides OTTO, there's an alternative plugin here (named AL) : JELSTUDIO AutoLoudness VSTplugin

Besides that, your point is spot on; an automated plugin is always a compromise.

OTTO is actually more like an auto-limiter that maximizes the waveform as close to +-1 as it can (maximum speaker-movement being the goal), where AL is more like an auto-gain (it does not change the waveform-shape, but just applies + or - gain to target a specific loudness)

There are demos for both plugins
(I actually could use some feedback to see where they work ok and where they do not Even if you don't need the plugin, some feedback on the demo is always helpful for me )
