Huge Daking fan here
I've got a lot of options but don't think there's a more useful combination than a pre/EQ + FET II
If I wasn't already running a 4k I'd be really interested in this console

Very powerful system indeed !

This paired with a radar system would be about all one would need.

Watched all the videos and totally agree about the production methods reducing time from start to finish without too much mousing around.

Interested in price as well.

Cheers

Just watched another vid and a 16 channel has 48 channels at mix? Still trying to sort that one out.

A 16 channe desk can rout 2 line signals to the 2 buss and you have 8 returns plus another 8 general inputs in the center section. You will burn 2 channels somewhere returning the mix of the upper section of the channels. So a 16 channel console actually gives you 46 line inputs to the mix buss! You can also expand with another 16 channels anytime and that will add 32 line inputs to the mix buss. Very flexible setup indeed!

You can tell he has actually worked in a studio! So many consoles have been designed by people who obviously haven't a clue other than what they've seen on other consoles. The blind are leading the blind so often when it comes to consoles.

About 65k for a 16ch 10-12 K more then a API 1608. But has 16 Compressors... Too much for me, but I'm sure Colleges' and Commercial studios can afford them.

It has quite a few routing options (plus the comps) as compared to the 1608.

The gain change element is a VCA, not a FET, for a bunch of reasons, primarily heat. FET's are very temperature sensitive. We developed this compressor for the 500 racks because you never know what is going to be next to it, maybe a tube mic pre.

The reasons that VCA compressors get a bad rap is because they are poorly designed, or at least not designed to behave the way the most popular compressors do.

Most VCA compressors are feed forward, ours is feedback.
Most have RMS detectors, ours has a peak detector.
VCA’s do not have voltage output. They have current and use and amplifier the same way that summing is done in console busses. Most use an internal ic amp. We use an all discrete transistor amplifier to convert current to voltage.

So, we use a VCA to behave like a FET,

A little more than a comparably equipped 1608 and much less than a 5088.

On mix down, there are the 16 main inputs, 8 return modules and an 8 input mixer. Then, the monitor input on the input module can be routed to 5-6, which can then go to 2 channels of the mixer, so the max total is 46 inputs.

All true, and that goes for almost all audio equipment. I spent 25 years in New York City commercial studios making records, film scores, jingles, you name it.

not just "time spent" as an engineer; Geoff is a really GOOD recording engineer... he knows what sounds good, and what one needs to get there.

I think it depends on "mix record" setting you have on the desk. I think one setting is pre, the other post.

Correct, in what we call the "Legacy" mode, direct out comes from the large fader.
In the "Mix Record" mode, the direct comes from the Insert Return, so that if there is a device patched there, it will be recorded. Capish?

As much as I'd love a console... I'm still loving my FET 2 compressor. Used on every mix and will grab another next time I'm stateside.

love it!

There are very few consoles that have compresors on every channel. The SSL Duality is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. It's an awesome feature.

Looks amazing!

Confused as to what the "GROUP OUT" knob is for.
On any other large format console I have worked on, I understand its function.
However, I don't see any group outputs, or a place to assign to a specific group output.
On a 16 channel console... are there 16 output groups, if so... how are they assigned?

I feel like I am missing something obvious,
very curious
