e-instruments today released Session Keys Electric S - a new and comprehensive electric piano instrument for Kontakt.

At almost 20 GB in size, Electric S is probably the most detailed sampled stage piano around.

The fourth member of the Session Keys family, it offers the pro features e-instruments users have come to expect; including two distinct sample sets, the Animator, Smart Chord and Pentamorph.

Authentically sampling the suitcase
To recreate this much-loved electric piano classic e-instruments hunted high and low for a top-quality original. They unearthed a magnificent 1973 suitcase, which spent weeks undergoing specialist restoration to bring it painstakingly back to peak condition.

It was recorded with and without the original speaker to create two separate sound sets:
Studio, with direct unaltered line-out sound, and
Live, which captures the sound of cabinet and speakers through an extensive microphone setup.

The faithful recording captures all acoustic noises and resonances together with the pure acoustic tines sound, giving the user the option to blend acoustic and electric sound.

Going beyond the original

Session Keys Electric S doesn’t stop at the careful reproduction of the original electric piano sound. Its powerful production tools include:
  • The Animator with 400 ready-to-play professional licks and phrases in different genres and styles. Much more than a phrase player, the Animator follows keys and harmonies while providing complete control over dynamics and complexity using the pitch bend and modulation wheels.
  • The Smart Chord function to create instant piano chords from single keys or pads.
  • The Pentamorph - giving the classic suitcase piano a complex new sound in a matter of seconds. Blend from pure piano to reversed sounds via other complex tones, all with one control.

Session Keys Electric S comes with full NKS (Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol Keyboard) integration. The light guide gives visual feedback of all controls, keyswitches and even the notes the Animator is playing.

The sound and feel of a classic

Session Keys Electric S combines authentic sound, flexible operation, and unique controls to make it feel like you’re playing the real thing, producing sounds you wouldn’t imagine were created electronically.

Nice! And a good price for R owners. Not sure the difference between the two justifies it, for me, but it looks like a great product.

Bought it yesterday, downloaded overnight (it's a big download) and installed and tested this morning.

Sounds great. The primary difference between it and the Session Keys R is that it is a suitcase Rhodes instead of a stage Rhodes, and they sampled it from direct out and also with mics on the speaker cabinet. You get the speaker cabinet sound when you select "Live" mode.

The fact that it is a different Rhodes than the Session Keys R means there is definitely a difference in the tonality. Enough of a difference that I can tell the two apart. It's great to have the two different models.

As with Session Keys R, you can adjust all the noises (pedal, key off, tine and pickup position) in the "Tonality" section. To adjust the effects, select the "Effects" section, of course.

With the Pentamode, you can make it sound strange, reversed, swelling, etc.

I prefer the "Studio" version of Session Keys S and I then run it through Amplitube4 on a Fender amp setting if I want the amp/speaker cabinet sound.
That said, the "Live" version with the sampled cabinet sounds good.

If you already own Session Keys R, $49 to upgrade is a no-brainer. Highly recommended. I own every single Rhodes plug-in there is, except for the Waves one, and the e-instruments ones are by far my favorite.

For years I worked with a guy who played a Rhodes Suitcase. I own the Session Keys R and it's quite good. But I could never make it sound like that guy's Suitcase. I agree with Dave Polich that this is at the very top of Suitcase Rhodes emulations. I have some others but this really gives me the vibe I used to get from the real thing. They captured the fatness in the midrange.

Shouldn't this be in the sample-based instrument category instead of software?

Anyone who has compared this to Neo Soul Keys? This one sounds really good imo (much better than Waves Electric 88 imo). Looking forward to hearing Spitfire's upcoming version too: PP027 - NORTH 7 KEYS - Spitfire Audio

Really looking forward to the Spitfire release too! I'm holding off on several things just in case they suddenly release it.

I just bought the Waves Elctric 88 which I think is great and very playable and customizable - a bargian for £24!

But if Spitfire Audio is doing a Rhodes .... well then I'm going to wait to hear that before I spend anymore money on electric pianos.
