Bump? Any more thoughts?
How’s the opticom 500 slam drums? How is it on kick and snare? I found the one YouTube demo and it seemed alright, but I’d love to hear more clips and hands on experiences.

The retro double wide is the competition.
Thanks

From the video, the Opticom seems to be the most versatile 500 series valve based optical comp out there, especially for that purpose you mention. To me, and if it could pull off the la-2a slow goo mode as well, it would be an absolute no-brainer compared to the Retro, which seems to involve a bit more work setting up. Personally, i don't want that work, i want quick results that sound good and let me focus on making music.

I recently picked up an Opticom and have noticed that the input is crazy sensitive, is this normal? When sending a bass or guitar track that’s peaking at -12dBFS, I’m getting 5-7 dB of reduction with the input between 1 and 2. The amount of gain reduction also changes with the slightest touch of the input knob. Is anyone else experiencing this? On any other opto I have, I’m running the input and output much higher to get a reasonable signal.

I picked up one recently and mine is not like that. I’ve tracked with it twice and mixed once. All drum tracks. I did not have that kind of sensitivity. Mine seems to be normal, but this is also my first compressor so YMMV.

Mine is crazy sensitive as well.
There is also a spitty section on the output knob at about position 5 (12 o’clock).

But other than that, when dialled in this is giving huge sounds.
Vox can take routinely 7-10db reduction on this unit and it gets fatter as you drive the output.

I’ve used it mainly on vox and bass, still love it, never selling.
I;d like a vari-mu to complete my set, but that’s another beast.
