ADAM Audio becomes part of the Focusrite Group

Berlin, July 16th, 2019. The Focusrite Group, which comprises the Focusrite, Focusrite Pro, Novation and Ampify Music brands, today announced the acquisition of leading studio monitor company, ADAM Audio GmbH of Berlin, Germany.

This is the first acquisition for The Focusrite Group since going public in 2014; a clear demonstration of their careful consideration around which brands should join in the Group’s mission to ‘Remove Barriers to Creativity’. As Focusrite Founder and Chairman Phil Dudderidge comments:

“I am delighted that we have an important new addition to our family of brands. For the Focusrite Group, the creation and recording of music is everything. With a vision to create the most holistic creative experience for recording professionals and musicians alike, choosing the right high-precision studio monitor brand is key. Together with ADAM Audio we can achieve so much more, removing the technical barriers that frustrate artists seeking to record and reveal their true sound.”

Importantly, the Focusrite Group has stated that initial focus is squarely on ensuring ADAM Audio has all the necessary freedom and autonomy to continue their lifetime story of technological innovations. However, as Tim Carroll, CEO of the Focusrite Group admits, it will be hard to contain the excitement in both companies to start innovating together:

“ADAM Audio is undeniably a leader in the field of electroacoustics. The A7Xs and S3s have become standards in recording spaces across the globe. Even so, I know the team have no interest in resting on their laurels. We need to ensure they receive all the support they require to continue raising the sonic bar. That our two companies are so aligned from a cultural perspective reassures me that, as we increasingly work together, great things will happen. With so much expertise between us in acoustics, sound reproduction, DSP, Audio-over-IP and control, the opportunities are abundant to refine recording and production workflows together.”

ADAM Audio will continue to operate out of their main offices in Berlin, Germany, under the leadership of Christian Hellinger, who comments: “What a perfect beginning for the next chapter of our great company’s story. I’m so proud of what the ADAM Audio team has achieved over the past 20 years, and can’t wait to see what we’ll achieve together with the Focusrite Group in our 3rd decade of creating future-oriented innovative professional monitoring and loudspeaker technologies.”

I think I like this move. I remember some years ago Adam was going through some very hard times, so if this will help them get some stability, I'm all in for that. Besides, I already use a Focusrite interface with Adam monitors and a Novation controller, so it all seems to get together quite nicely. Interesting move. It's looking like Presonus and Focusrite are going head to head. Their line of interfaces and now monitors are very much alike. Presonus has some nice monitor controllers and S1, but Focusrite has Novation. It's getting interesting.

Anyone feels like there is exactly 3 companies in Berlin doing the exact same thing regarding research on Air Motion Tweeters (XRT or whatever)? I mean, there's ADAM, EVE and HEDD. All three with same Oscar Weil's technology from the beginning of last centruy. At least on basic principle, don't hold me for exact word but it's folded diafragme instaed of conventional tweeter design.

I listened to Mr. Heinz from HEDD who was with ADAM in the beginning. EVE also. So, what are differences between those three companies and their speakers? Same design, same principles, more or less same techology when it comes to DSP in Active crossovers. Of course that I simplifed this a lot. A lot! So don't hold me for every word and interpret it in a wrong way.

Will there be any significant pluses to us Focusrite gear holders and users? I know ADAM is probably the most talked about and sold but what about HEDD? Or EVE? What are the differences or are those two inferior to ADAM systems?

I'd like to know more about that story and details behind it all.

There is a substantial difference between the ADAM S3V monitors and the HEDD Type-20's; even the tweeter operates differently.

Adam lost all their best designers to Eve Audio and Hedd Audio. I'm sure what they really buying here is the brand.

Can't say much but somehow Mr. Heinz looks oldest of them all and his story goes waaaay back, a long time ago in last century, when he begin research on new possibilities. So, when I look at it all and he moving on to his own company and making "almost the same" but as he says, redesigned and improved technology for both cone and AMT (XRT tweeters) but also DSP, something tells me that HEDD and Mr. Heinz are reliable factor. That is why is strange that ADAM went to Focusrite instead all 3 of them stayed on and merged to probably what should/could have become one of the best loudspeaker companies today! At least for this kind and types of speakers for specific audio purposes.

To me, HEDD looks and feels very convincing. That is all I can say as I didn't try them for myself nor have heard them in my room.

That's all from me for now...

I did not like Adam Audio's entry on the headphone market by way of printing its name on an existing product, which, to me, was a quick buck operation.
Now we know why: its finances were probably very bad.

Let's hope Focusrite finds a way to preserve and perhaps even improve the quality of its monitors. Still love my A7s.

I reviewed the SP-5's and had a positive experience with them. Good review from Tape-Op too. YMMV.

Hope monitors wont be of lower quality in future, it would be good if they can keep up with quality standard and same prices...

Those first ADAM's were an iconic and high-selling monitor. This may have led to tension between development and 'not re-inventing the wheel.' The next designs would not only need to be good enough but also 'better' than the predecessors. If it ain't broke don't fix it - but make me a better monitor, faster, and for less money (relatively-speaking). I'm speculating.

In that environment it's natural that designers will want to spread their wings; that's a healthy evolution for everyone IMO and we see a similar (past stability-future success) dynamic in many other companies. Personally I would choose ADAM's for one role and HEDD's for another (ditto EVE); that's to my benefit as a consumer, and a general benefit to the industry in terms of hybridisation and knowledge transfer. ADAM is a relatively small company; Focusrite can offer opportunities and solutions.

All those ads with smiling slutz at the console with S3H's on the bridge are true stories.

Well since they put the Adam Audio business up for sale perhaps the brand just wasn't selling in high volumes. It's a highly competitive market, I don't think Adam can compete at the very high end of the audio industry and at the low end there's stuff from likes of Presonus and JBL etc etc. Focusrite's main income earners tend to be the more affordable recording gear. They sell way more audio interfaces than they do high end analogue outboard. So I'd like to see where in the market they're gonna position Adam's new speakers going forward.

Focusrite currently distribute KRK speakers in the UK. I don't see them keeping with both brands now.
