Solid info on RAM,SSD's.Where to go?

Hi guys,Im upgrading my PC to hopefully get another 2 years out of it.I had it built about 5 years ago.Im gona replace the hard drive with a SSD and upgrade from 4 gigs of ram to 8 or possibly 16.Ive researched a good bit but Im still a bit confused as to what to get.My concern is compatibility issues with my mother board.Just looking for links to a good computer forum as its all a bit techy for me and more confused now than when i started.Cheers

Go to your motherboard's manufacturer's site and find the page for yours. That should list all the specs, such as compatible types of RAM and whatever. When you come to the SSDs, make sure you have a good look at the read and write speeds to make sure you get the right one for your uses.

RAM:
Which motherboard do you have? The choice of RAM primarily depends on the number of available RAM slots on your motherboard/CPU and the supported RAM-type and -speed (like in "DDR3-1333"). If you only have 2 RAM slots, you'll need 2x 8 GB RAM modules, if you have 4 slots, you can go 4x4 GB or 2x8 GB (by only using 2 slots) etc.

SSD:
The only thing that matters is if you have a SATA connection available on your motherboard. I would get the cheapest model from a name brand (e.g. Samsung, Kingston, Crucial, Corsair, to name a few), because all of them are FAST!

But the best would be to grab the manual from your motherboard (or make a photo of it), go to your local computer store and ask for compatible components. This might not be the cheapest but the safest route.

crucial

Go to the link. Run there PC scanner, will tell you exactly what RAM your motherboard will take. Will also tell you the number of slots, max amount of ram installable etc. Proved pretty useful in the past.

If you're looking for a tech website that doesn't screw around, go to Anandtech.com. Bookmark it.

Other info given on this thread is solid as well, your mobo will have a list of compatible RAM.
