preamp/interface comparison test

I have a motu 896 (original version) and an apogee duet. According to what I've read, the duet's preamps are supposed to be better. So, a friend and I compared the two preamps for recording guitar and drums. For guitar we used a Sennheiser e906 and for drums (just overheads) a pair of Shure KSM 141s. I took care to keep the mics in the same position while switching preamps.

The result: I couldn't hear a difference. In a blind a/b test I couldn't differentiate between either. We monitored through both the duet and the 896 with both headphones and monitors.

So the question is: what sort of test will bring out the supposed difference in preamp/converter quality between these two interfaces?

thanks!

from my experience the preamps on interfaces are designed to be as linear as possible. So the reall difference is in the noise and dynamic range.

So I would try to record something really loud and see wich one will start clipping first.

Cheerz!

Try recording really quiet **** - finger picked acoustic guitar, etc. Listen to the reverb tails and noisefloor at high gain ...
