Compressing toms

I want to know some good ballpark settings to compress toms so that they retain their attack but the decay is more controlled. Any ideas about attack, release, ratio etc would be helpful.

Toms only get Transient Designer and a little EQ here.

I like to use a gate set for downwards expansion. You can use it to preserve the attack, and then get that tail to back out of the way. As for compression settings, slow attack to preserve the transient, say 30ms or so to start, release set to so that the compressor release just before the next tom hit, and maybe start with a ratio of 8:1, set threshold to taste. The higher you set the threshold, the farther down the decay will get sucked down by the compressor. I wouldn't dial in make up gain since you are looking to reduce the level of the tails. Just some ideas.
