mic pre / channel strip

Hey there,

If you could buy only one good mic-pre or channel strip what would you choose?
I'm trying to decide between the API 7600, SSL or Potico NEVE, maybe some other ones...

It depends on the music and what you want the recording to sound like.

In general: if I could only buy one I would buy a neutral one otherwise everything you record has the same color. I would prefer to get color by choosing microphones, ………

It is like the question if you could only buy one AD converter. Would you take one with color or a transparent one?

Cool, thanks,

I record mostly rock at the moment (normally all kinds of music), I'm looking for one that goes well with male rock vocals, acoustic guitars etc..
I heard good things about the API 7600 channel strip, does anyone have any expierence with the 7600?
And the SSL channel strip and Neve Potico?
I heard great thing on this website about the Portico as well

I bought a Universal Audio LA-610 channel strip which sounded great on vocals, bass, and acoustic guitar...but not much else. So I ended up selling it and getting a Great River ME-1NV and an FMR Really Nice Compressor. I deliberated for quite some time, and ultimately found this to be the best all around set up for the money for me. The insert point on the Great River allows you to patch in (and balance if need be) a compressor or eq before the output stage. It sounds great on just about everything and I'm not missing the eq as much as I thought. I had to have a DI, so the Portico was out of the question.

For mostly rock - that's easy. API

So the API 7600 channel strip would be the way to go..
