moving .dat-files to other locations

So I just installed USB-Charlie VSTi.
What I was wondering, if you can move the .dat-files to another location
or harddrive, like USB .dat files or Trilogy or Atmosphere .dat files.
And let your sequencer (Logic 5.5.1-PC) find those files?
Or do you HAVE to cram your system-drive with all those files, because
the vst-folder on C:/Program Files/Emagic/Logic5.5.1/VstPlugins/ is the only
folder where the .dat files will be recognized?
Instead of, for example: E:/Spectrasonics/Trilogy or E:/USB/Charlie?? confoosed

Thanx!

Depends on the plug in. Some will let you put the .dat file where you want when you install, some will let you hunt for the .dat when you launch the plug, some wont let you put the .dat anywhere except where they want you to put it.

As for your particular plug I am not sure as I don't own it.

charlie is a great plug. if i remember correctly, you can store the .dat file on another drive but you need to update your plugin to the latest version. the old v1.0 required the .dat file to be in the vstplugin folder - the newer one can use a shortcut/alias...

for USB i dont know.. spectrasonics plugins, theres a tool downloadable from a spectrasonics website for doing that..it updates the registry with the new path

you could always reinstall

Coolio!
I'll check it out.
It would be absurd to have a 200 gig drive and not to
be able to use it because some soft-company is restricting you
to install certain files to a specific location...

Hello,

Sorry for reviving this thread, but it showed up when I was searching for this issue and it contains no answer.
I recently moved my trilogy.dat to a SSD for faster acces and the Spectrasonics Trilogy bass plugin was obviously no longer working because of the file path change.
Well, after digging a bit into the issue with some of my debugging tools since I have some reverse engineering background, found that all you have to do is this (PC Version):

1. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Trilogy
2. Click on the registry entry named "Value3"
3. You will see some hex characters for which the registry editor also shows the string equivalent, which is the path like in the picture below
http://dezea.net/movetrilogy.jpg
4. Just edit that and change it to your current path, click OK (for me it was just a matter of changing G:/ to F:/)

IMHO the solution is similar to other Spectrasonics products.
