The cell phone celebrates its 30th birthday this week, reports CNN. The first public cellular call was made in Manhattan on April 3, 1973.

"The [first] phone was a mammoth by today's standards -- it weighed almost two pounds and was 10 inches long. Talk time was 20 minutes. Still, it was a huge advance over the car-mounted mobile phones that had been in use since the 1940s."

Apple has been rumored to be working on cellular phone technology for several years. Commonly referred to as the iPhone, a variety of mock-ups and speculative designs are available. Back in August 2002, the New York Times reported on Apple's venture into personal communication:

"Analysts and people close to the company say that the plan is under way and that the evidence is manifest in the features and elements of the new version of the Macintosh operating system."

Years ago my piano tuner, who was blind, was the only one i knew with a cell phone. For him it was something of a necessity to help him get around. I remember it came in it's own suitcase!!!
