Digi 192 and Digi 96 sound same at 48kHz?

Hi,

I am about to do the 2 bus thing and was wondering about convertors............

I have an HD2 system. A digi 192 interface and a Digi 888/24.

I am thinking of doing one of two things...

1. Trade in the 888 against a Digi 96 or...........

2. Keep the 888 and just buy the D/A card for the 192.

This would be to get me 16 channels of D/A (the 888 I would not use for D/A) into the D2b. The 888 is just used for extra D/A when tracking a kit.

What I am wondering is if the Digi 96 sounds the same as a 192 if they are both running at 48k?

Is the 96 just a stripped down version of a 192 (I would not think so but maybe I am wrong) ?

The long and short of it is I don't want to spring for another 192 unless I have to!

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Nik

Hey Nik,

Just get the 192 D/A.

The 192 and 96 are totally different(including the sound).

The 96 does improve when clocked externally(I clock it with my HEDD unit and it sounds much better).

Still the 192 D/A is the way to go.

My 2 cents.

Anybody know why they would be different? Better clock? Higher quality analog section? Bigger PSU?

i suspect a lot actually has to do with analog circuitry as well as the clocking.

Can Digi verify or deny this?

i have both 192 and 96ios on my hd system..the 192 sounds much better. the 96 also sounds better when clocked by the 192 then when it is clocked internally. both are better than my 888s in any case.

Surely this is like comparing an 888 and an 882. The 192I/O has better convertors (it handles upto 192kHz, the 96I/O only upto 96kHz). I reckon the 96 is in the same ballpark as the 888/24 for quality, the 192 is much much better (even at lower sample rates).

If you have the budget available, don't mess about and just trade in your 888/24 for another 192. Otherwise, if you can sacrifice the 8 A/D's, throwing in the 888 for the 192 D/A option will definitely improve your sound. Also remember that tapping an 888 onto a legacy port limits your sessions to 24/48 when using the 888, so this would also mean your rig is totally 24/192 capable.

The 192 sounds better than the 96.

I'd go for a HEDD, Apogee, Genex, Prism, or db Tech.

If you do a search of the DUC, you can probably find somewhere a post from a digi official where he confirms that the 192 is an Ed Meitner design. Apparently they poured most of their efforts, even subcontracting the design, towards making the 192 something special (FWIW), while the 96 i/o is more simply an evolution on the 888/24.

Thanks so much everyone. This was exactly the sort of feedback I was needing. Looks like I will either spring for another 192 or the D/A card at this time.

Thanks again,

Nik

I just ordered another 192.

Thanks everyone for the advice and direction. Much appreciated.
