Alice 828

Anyone know these old British mixers,
could these be used as a decent front end for a DAW?

I have an Alice desk. I think it is something like the 828. Discrete transformer inputs IIRC. Sounds excellent in any case.
Keep thinking of selling but get the feeling they go for a lot less than they should sonically speaking..
Designed by Ted Fletcher I believe.

Good, like this? Has it direct outs and how much gain available?

Thanks

Hi Matti
I don't think it does have direct outs to be honest. Mine looks similar but a bit larger. It has a limiter on the output and 12 channels (so maybe a 1282 or something)
I will check later today re gain etc. Been a while!

Yep, please tell me!

dlmorley 27th September 2007 10:27 AM

Just found my pics so made a quick webpage
It is a 2008 but is still 8 channels.
A few pics here
Alice Stancoil Desk

Has direct outs..
looks like approx 80db of gain

Matti 27th September 2007 10:38 AM

Thanks!
Do I see right it needs a separate power supply for phantom?
The 828 seems to be an older and simpler version but 8 trafo inputs
of decent quality...

dlmorley 27th September 2007 10:52 AM

ps: one like mine went for like £30 on ebay (collection only!)
CRAZY!

Matti 27th September 2007 11:31 AM

I´m looking at a similiar grazy deal!

Go for it!
This stuff doesn't look sexy or have a cool image, but it's top notch stuff, built in an era where quality was the main issue, not name and image jkthtyrt

dlmorley 27th September 2007 11:53 AM

A finished ebay on auction shows the back of an 828. Looks like it has direct out per channel like mine. Mine has XLR for mic and line and main outs, but probably very similar.

Matti 27th September 2007 11:54 AM

Once the seller answers to my questions I´ll take it,
I´m pretty sure!

Cheers

Matti

dlmorley 27th September 2007 11:55 AM

found this recording done on an 828.

Matti 27th September 2007 12:07 PM

Yes, they have some nice music on their site.
Tim & Nath New Project - Work In Progress also done with828
If the 828 has the same gain as yours -which it
probably has- my ribbon mic hobby may start.
Besides I have tube mics, so I don´t need phantom
on all channels anyways!

Heh!

Matti

P.S. Thanks for your help!

Matti 28th September 2007 12:02 AM

Well, I bought it.
In a week or so I´ll see what I get, but Guy from
Acousticrecord answered my post and kindly
told me some more about these litle mixers.
It seems I did a deal of the year for me.

My 55th. birthday is nearing, maybe that´s why for once...

Off to test mine out again cooge

Matti 30th September 2007 08:52 AM

Not so nice as the seller is backing from the deal...?!

Matti

dlmorley 30th September 2007 09:14 AM

That sucks...

Matti 30th September 2007 12:13 PM

I guess he/she noticed this conversation and wants to raise the price against
the rules.

Never mind, move on

Matti

Although we pointed out how cheap these things go for, so they may have bumped the price too much...

That is why I do my best not to talk about something I'm about to buy in public.
Once it's in hand, that's another story -- I'll talk up a storm.

Matti 1st October 2007 12:39 AM

Its still on sale after my offers to pay more even its´s not
an aucktion.....

That's very odd?

IMO, don't go too nuts with offering more bread. It's just fueling the fire.

I wonder why your deal went in this direction? It doesn't make sense.

Keep us posted.

Matti 1st October 2007 12:53 AM

Well, I feel insulted but went on... took the beers and
payed bills i didn´t remember of

hey, if it's still up in a week, give them another shout.

You never know -- it could end up being yours after all.

dubrichie 20th July 2009 02:18 PM

thread revival!

i just picked up an Alice Stancoil 2008-828 as part of a trade.

i need to change the funky AC connector for an IEC so that i can turn it on.

she looks and feels great, in excellent condition.

can anyone help me to get ahold of any literature for her, such as schematics, or anything at all?

i can't wait to fire her up and do some old school 8 track funk recording, maybe even live to 2 track on my recently acquired and rebuilt Studer B62.

yummy...

The Alice 828 was an excellent desk.

I bought mine in the late 1970s with BBC spec. PPMs and later upgraded to the low-noise board.

Very well made and an excellent desk - but noisy by today's standards. When I went digital in 1983 it became the weakest part of the chain and the mixer noise was where the noise was coming from - I sold it in the late '80s and bought a Mackie, which was much quieter.

AT the Time, Alice Stancoil was Ted Fletcher and John Andrews.

My 828 did *not* need a separate PSU for phantom power.

But it did not like running 8 condenser mics.

In the end I snipped the phantom bus and powered 4 from the desk and the other 4 via external supplies.

Matti 21st July 2009 09:19 PM

I have a Flecther ( Alice at the time ) preamp wich also seems to be consertive with the phantom amperage if I understand - some mics need juice.
I think Schoeps and DP have plugin xlr testers for suitability with their mics.
