A mixers sound stage
 
I have a question about mixers and panning. Some mixers seem to have a wider sound stage than others. What causes this? Is it the type of taper on the pan pots? Which taper is best? I am working on a mixer right now that seems like I can pan things either mostly left or right or in the middle, but it seems to lack degrees of subtlety in between those 3.

Any ideas?
