IK Multimedia unveils AmpliTube Brian May for Mac/PC, iPhone and iPad

Guitarists now have authentic access to the entire rig of the legendary Queen guitarist

August 22, 2019 - IK Multimedia is proud to announce AmpliTube Brian May for Mac/PC, iPhone and iPad. Both feature precise models of the exact live and studio gear used by the legendary guitarist from the iconic band Queen - all recreated in collaboration with Brian May himself.

From Brian's treble booster to his three-amp live setup and carefully curated effects selection, guitarists can enjoy new amp, cab and stompbox models in a convenient package, along with presets covering his celebrated discography. Each model was created with the supervision of Brian May and his long-time technical team, to carefully replicate his rig.

A key element of Brian's distinct sound comes from his Red Special guitar that, famously, he hand built with his father in the 1960s from spare parts and household materials. Because the guitar is such an integral part of his rig, IK's engineers went the extra mile to even create a new stompbox effect that helps simulate the Red Special's tone and controls. This offers guitarists a more authentic musical experience that pays homage to this living legend.

Inside AmpliTube Brian May
Available in convenient desktop app and plug-in for any DAW, AmpliTube Brian May offers up to 11 new models including 2 amps, 3 cabinets, and up to 6 stompbox effects.

Included are unique offerings such as a new pedal modelling Brian's Red Special guitar and a model of the one-of-a-kind, home-built "Deacy" Amp (with user adjustable battery power!) originally created by Queen bassist John Deacon, after modifying an old radio. Other highlights incorporate his famous triple-amp live setup; tone-shaping effects; and even a harmonizer for nailing those Queen stacked leads in a single take.

Amplifiers
Based on the classic triple VOX® AC30™ setup, the BM 30 offers three amps with the effects chain in a Wet-Dry-Wet configuration to match Brian May's iconic setup. The BM DK is a model of the small "Deacy" amp that became the trademark sound of many Queen songs.

Cabinets
The 2x12 BM 30 Blue (named the 2x12 BM1 in the Brian May collection for iOS) is a triple cabinet based on the cab section of a VOX AC30 equipped with with Celestion™ Alnico Blue speakers. The 2x12 BM 30 H70 (2x12 BM2 in the Brian May collection for iOS) is with Celestion G12H Anniversary speakers. In addition, the 1x6 BM DK provides the cabinet section of the BM DK amp, featuring a 6" speaker.

Stompboxes
The Red Special, created from a detailed study of Brian May's famous guitar, helps add the unique tonality and controls of the Red Special itself. Based on the original KAT® Treble Booster, the Treble Booster enriches guitar tone similar to Brian May's by boosting it before it reaches the amp.

May Wah was based on a rackmount Dunlop® Cry Baby® wah, modelled in the exact configurations Brian May uses to shape his tone, while the FOX Phaser was based on the unique and distinctive sound of the fOXX® Foot Phaser.

Star Gate is a noise gate that helps clean up the signal chain, minimizing the noise feeding Brian's unique amp and pedal setup.

The iPhone and iPad version, the Brian May Collection (which is inside the existing AmpliTube app) also adds the 30 - a 30-band Graphic EQ, with +/- 15 dB boost per band and a+/- 15dB Level control, to help craft a more exact match of Brian's tones. This pedal is already included for free in AmpliTube Custom Shop for Mac/PC.

Discography presets
A full set of painstakingly created song-based discography presets were compiled by Jamie Humphries, guitarist for the official Queen stage production "We Will Rock You", who has also performed with Queen and Brian May. These presets allow users to dial up their favourite Brian May tones instantly and were constructed under Brian's personal supervision.

Groundbreaking Modelling Technology
IK's latest Dynamic Interaction Modeling™ was used to deliver the highest level of ultra-realistic sound when modelling Brian May's gear. The product of 20 years' experience modelling analogue gear, DIM™ models the behaviour of every component in the circuit all the way down to its smallest nuance and character. Applied to May's rig, it delivers the same sound and feel as his real gear.

Judging by the video, it sounds quite authentic (for amp sim), reminded me of listening to A Night At The Opera on vinyl for the first time. Exciting sound. The 3 Vox spatial effect is cool and I like the sag/compression of the little lead amp.

zakufan 22nd August 2019 12:49 PM

does it qualify for the group buy?

The audio demos at IK sound fabulous, but... they were performed by Jamie Humphries who is as close to Brian May as it's possible to get and probably used a Red Special which is (other than BM's fingers) really important in getting the BM sound.

Definitely gonna have to demo this for sure though. It's a toss-up between MODO drums and this I guess. I'm a drummer at heart and a crappy guitarist when I'm making music and yet this is the one that excites me more!

Arthur Stone 22nd August 2019 01:47 PM

Thanks cprompt!
The next video has some demo's and patches with Jamie:

It's interesting to hear the sounds in isolation.

Thank you for the kind words! We're very proud of this (and our recent gang of releases) and glad you like what you hear. As a longtime fan, I have been excited over this for a while. Glad we can finally share it with all of you.

The Pick & Mix Group Buy started before this release and this is not a part of that promotion

He does have and use a Red Special for a lot of his Queen work but he's used various guitars for the AmpliTube Brian May materials - I'm told we'll have another video from him using a guitar that is not a Red Special to show off how the Red Special stomp works (and from experience using it for a while it sure does!!). You should definitely give the demo a try too, the presets are really great to start (I hadn't used them until very recently and was also able to make great Brian May - and other - tones easily even without them).

I've watched quite a few videos with Jamie Humphries and if there's someone I trust to nail the Brian May sound, it's him. And if he says he put the presets together, then I absolutely trust that he's done a good job.

Yeah, he briefly used a humbucker in that video and it sounded pretty damn good!

I will!

I see in Custom Shop that this is available for 80 credits (and seeing as I have 10 left in my account, I only need to buy the 75 credit pack rockout Any idea Peter this long this 80 credit promotion will last for?

The price I'm seeing in Custom Shop is 100 credits which is the correct price. There is no current promotional pricing on AmpliTube Brian May.

Props to IK for releasing this without any lame pre-sale period :cowbell: Nothing worse than hearing about a new product that looks awesome, then realizing it's not out for another 6-8 weeks. Glad they didn't do that with this one. Demos sound great. Looking forward to testing it tonight.

We did hit everybody with a not-so-subtle teaser a few days ago though. Guilty as charged on that one, I'll take the beating on that one :cop:

I beg to differ:

https://i.snipboard.io/hOY8rE.jpg

However, when I click Buy it does revert back to the full 100 credits:

https://i.snipboard.io/60qKXd.jpg

A bit disappointing but not the end of the world.

And now that I refresh in Custom Shop, that intro offer has gone. Indeed, 'twas never thus. Oh well...

I've relayed this to the team but the price since release was set to 99.99 or 100 Gear Credits. I checked the news, the web page, the web store, and the system itself and don't see it set to any other price since the time of release so what you saw was unfortunately not correct. Sorry about that, it appears to have been corrected, though.

Trying to resist the urge to...okay..can’t
resist asking..

Amplitube Brian May doesn’t require
a processor with the AVX instruction set,
does it?

telecode 23rd August 2019 02:37 AM

The fact that the pick and mix deal started before this release is a little weak of an argument. I feel there is not enough newer guitar based products and seems to lean more towards the Tracks 5 products which puts people that are interested more in guitar and not that much into mastering and mixing at a bit of a disadvantage.

I think IK should put it on as it's one of the newer products for guitar of this is supposed to push sales on Amplitube in a crowded guitar software market.

Just my 2.cents.

It does not as it runs in AmpliTube 4's engine.

We never put products that come out after a promotion starts into that promotion that's 2/3 done. It's a logistical nightmare on top of the qualifying products being laid out already in general for those participating. Not to mention that new products are rarely given away free. What other newer guitar collections are not there? The rest that were out should be represented (Dimebag - newest before this one, Slash, Orange, Jimi Hendrix, Fender, Fender 2, Metal, etc).

Squeegee 303 23rd August 2019 03:59 AM

IK deserve to earn some money for their hard work on this one. It sounds great.

Have I got a story for you...

About 15 years ago, I was doing a session in a studio in Dublin, Ireland. We were told we may need to move upstairs (studio 2/ B?) because there was a celebrity "charity" recording taking place on such-and-such a date. Sure... no probs.

The day(s) came... we were already upstairs, but then it happened...

A really good mate of mine, Se... Shay... to English speakers. He, at the time, was the chief technician at the studio... big league position. He called me upstairs, and asked could I come downstairs?

I did. I walk into the main control room... look through the glass... and there is Brian May... far less grey than now, but there he is.

Now... I'm more a Andy Summers, Alex Lifeson, Lanois, Edge-type guitar player, but, Shay? Queen through and through. Anyway...

Its DONE! Session is DONE!

Brian May is on the other side of glass looking at us (Shay). Comms are open... he can hear us ( Shay). He asks... uhhhh lads... anything you'd like to hear?

Me being a big-mouthed goof-ball... uno momento por favor, mr May.

I ask Shay... right NOW! Right fkn now!

Shay asks... we will rock you?

Push the comms... uhhhhhh... We Will Rock You?

In such a godDamn cool way... he smiles/chuckles... then lets it rip...

No dick. No prick.

Again... not my kind of guitar man/woman,

But the We Will Rock You...

Those 20/30 seconds at the end...

shivers

I don't have an amazing story, but this reminds me of the time 20 years ago when I was driving around Ireland on business for a week, and I got to the last customer and she asked me where I'd been. She then proceeded to cry with laughter as I mispronounced every single name. Sorry Ireland

That guitar solo... that song... to me...

My Da had a job where he went around the world. I heard that song...

Dun-Dun Da
Dun-Dun Da

It was like the Jaws music. Anyway...

The bass player had a logo-thing on him in that video. THAT was what drove me nuts when I was young. I was fascinated. My dad eventually came back to me in Dublin and said... its a sport called ice-hockey... the team is called the Chicago Blackhawks! ! !

Dun-Dun Da
Dun-Dun Da

THAT was MY thing! Se's thing was Queen!

That solo (if you can call it that)... that groove at the end... them fingers.

Music... the love...

the mud on our face

Realtugs 23rd August 2019 12:45 PM

Here we are...

Any ice hockey/Chicago (phenomenal city) fans! You had me at like age 4. Life-long love affair was born.

Best pizza in the world....

...sorry New York!
