sonible releases A.I. powered compressor plug-in

smart:comp is the latest addition to the product line of A.I. powered plug-ins by sonible. This unique spectro-dynamic compressor finds the parameters for well-balanced compression results in just a few seconds. Through frequency-selective processing, smart:comp also ensures unparalleled transparency. With this multidimensional approach, compression has evolved to the next level.

smart:comp is the synergy of intelligently enhanced time-domain compression and trailblazing spectral compression. Behind the user-friendly and intuitive interface of this new plug-in, runs the smart:engine – an A.I.-based, content-aware system designed on the basis of psychoacoustic principles as well as extensive hands-on mixing experience.

The time-domain compressor recommends the most appropriate settings for threshold, ratio, attack and release with a single click, as the spectral compression dynamically keeps an eye on the tonal balance of the input signal.

The interrelated nature of compression parameters can make the crucial task of compression time-consuming and tedious. smart:comp significantly speeds up this process and delivers results with greater precision than ever, making it a valuable assistant for mixing and mastering professionals and aspiring talents alike.

Getting the best out of a track: content-aware parametrization and tonal balance

When activating the learning mode of smart:comp, the plug-in analyzes the incoming audio signal and sets specific parameters that result in well-balanced compression – all with the familiar look and handling of a single band compressor.

The spectral compression is all about giving a track the best possible definition and maximum transparency. By continuously analyzing the input signal across more than 2000 bands, smart:comp acts like an intelligent, ultra-high-resolution multiband compressor that dynamically smoothes out tonal imbalances. It only applies compression where it is really needed and therefore ensures a consistent tonal and dynamic balance at all times.

Creating space: frequency-dependent sidechain ducking

To seamlessly merge signals that compete for attention within the same spectral regions, smart:comp ‘listens’ for potential spectral clashes between the input and the sidechain signals, when operating in sidechain mode. By dynamically ducking affected frequency regions of the input signal, it creates space for the sidechain signal.

Users’ choice – easy to use and fast

smart:comp comes with a lean and intuitive user interface that allows for easy handling of this high-tech tool. Although the plug-in greatly assists in creating a fast workflow when the smart:engine is activated, users retain their control over the final outcome and are able to access and adjust all essential parameters.

Similar to sonible’s smart:EQ 2, the new compressor plug-in smart:comp comes equipped with profiles for different audio sources. These profiles allow smart:comp to optimally adapt its internal processing to the characteristics of the respective input signal.

"As compression is probably the most critical task in the mixing process, the development of smart:comp has been a fascinating challenge. Together with our engineering team, we wanted to take the next step in the evolution of audio compression – and now we can proudly say: We have taken it!" Alexander Wankhammer, co-founder sonible GmbH

Interesting... will demo :)

Realtugs 24th June 2019 01:40 PM

The first of many, I'm sure.

Recently got their EQ for free when purchasing another plugin. What a world.

Notheorem729 24th June 2019 02:07 PM

I have a lot more testing to do still but had to come straight here to say... ARE YOU SERIOUS? The feature set alone is amazing. I am completely blown away based on my first impression alone. AND low-cpu? Plus it doesn't seem to have a ton of distortion although I haven't dug into that deep enough yet? I am impressed.

Jorn Lavoll 24th June 2019 02:21 PM

will demo right away!

ChocolateHawkins 24th June 2019 02:23 PM

I LOVE SmartEQ so I'm excited to try this. Watching some YT demos of it right now.

Same here. I am really admiring their forward thinking approach. It’s refreshing to see a company ignoring the analog emulation trend to really explore the strengths, power, and innovation that digital signal processing has to offer.

mxbf 24th June 2019 02:45 PM

id like to learn more about this, sounds interesing

Indeed. Kind of reminds me of Sonnox, back when they were Sony Oxford. Everyone was fighting it out to have their interfaces look like the original vintage pieces they were trying to emulate. Sony just pushed on. Still love their plugins. Use the Oxford EQ with Massenburg option often... Inflator... ...

Well done Sonible. Keep pushing!

Yes, include me too!

I use Soothe, Gulfoss and Spectral Shaper ... do I really need this?
Will demo and see!

I love this new AI technology in music and consider it as an additional tool I can use to get inspiration or just confirmation about what I did

motomotomoto 24th June 2019 05:54 PM

Looking forward to hearing some impressions from those who demo. Particularly interested in the side chaining capabilities to eliminate overlapping frequencies.

2000 bands, is this a similar approach to Paul Frindells's awesome DSM? Will try for sure.

This has more in common with DSM from plugin alliance.

Spectral ducking is one feature and not all this does. It's amazing for standard compression and will set every parameter for you. The spectral compression isn't all about making room or removing resonances it's about compressing the entire frequency range as well to apply even compression.

I'm trying to not sound like an advertisement because I haven't even purchased this yet but this is a whole different beast than soothe and trackspacer is basically a built in feature of this. Gulfoss has more in common with smart:eq as it basically applies a filter that responds to the input.

They have similarities but this is meant for dynamic range control and those are meant for frequency response control.

SleepCircle 24th June 2019 06:06 PM

trying to combine the features of gullfoss with a full compressor seems somehow like a bad idea, like… like it sounds like it'd be easier to over-process things, or do, like, the WRONG thing by accident.

like, this feels like it'd mostly work on a bus, and even then, it feels like it'd be difficult to get a specific result out of.

The spectral ducking is great. So easy to use and does exactly what you need. Plus it can set the parameters for you to give you a good starting point. The ability to filter the sidechain as well as the spectral ducking makes this ridiculously powerful.

Don't know about "need" since you've probably been doing fine before it's release but no one plugin seems to work for everything so yeah, eventually you'll probably reach for it when the others don't suit the project. I probably quit "needing" things years ago.It isn't only about need, it's about gearslutism!

Nikola_Tesla 24th June 2019 06:44 PM

Definitely going to install tomorrow when I get bro the studio to test, but I’m just curious what people think the intended use case is. Some compressors are for buses, mastering or color, etc...

From the video this looks like Soninke expects you to use this as a mixing compressor on each channel using the presets for different instruments to get your mix closer to some ideal they have set. Does this ring true in your use?

RobbieB1980 24th June 2019 11:57 PM

im playing with added this to all music channels to ... to see the differenece.. love the sc it helps to make space for the toms and kick and and bass to live :) the compressor gives life to the source :)

Jantex 25th June 2019 12:01 AM

This month is simply crazy with great releases. But this one is definitely my favorite out of them all (MagicDeathEye, Brighton, IK Tapes). This thing just kicked MagicDeathEye, Weiss and Portico MBP on three of the tracks I was working on today. And it really excells on solo sources just as much. Really what an amazing control you can achieve in a few seconds. Really pretty next level tool.
