That death row bass tone
 
Bros & sis i am new to the gs family so thank you

so i am in a place in my musical journey were all i hear is death rows music and i am trying to build a sound around this era of music so my first stop in this process is the bass guitar sound i dont have a clue on what to do to get that sound is it how they eq or if they compress or what gear they use

so far i have a fender jazz bass and a eden world tour what do i do should i buy more gear is there some kind of technique that i need to master can somebody point me in the direction of the g funk i know its roots are p funk also what kinds of string flats or round wound please and thanks

Sounds like a real bass to me - a P-Bass or a Yamaha BB series.

I don't know for sure, maybe someone can confirm, but it sounds like the Deathrow sound is influenced by funk artists like George Clinton and Brothers Johnson (Louis Johnson). Those bass guitars were the most commonly used ones by those type of artists in the era that is sampled by musicians such as Daz & Dr. Dre during that era at Death Row.

Real bass mostly played by Ricky rouse.
Check his interviews on YouTube.
There’s one he tells which guitar he used for the death row stuff.

From what I remember, the go to stuff for them at the time was real bass guitar and Moog synth bass.

And if I were to get nit-picky, for Hip Hop, I have always preferred the Precision Bass over Jazz Bass.
