I can't get on their website right now, are they done?

WallTone 3rd April 2019 01:53 PM

While I am really liking Exponential Audio for sound, quality and overall. I have a bit mixed impressions about iZotope as a brand. But if they will ditch iLok and will be throwing it for 29$ on every monthly sale - I will be really disappointed in both no matter how wonderful products are.

NO THEY ARE NOT DONE!
I just spoke to Michael Carnes. This was a good move for both parties.
His website will reflect the new changes here shortly.

This is a letter I just got. Does the licenses work on the programs downloaded from Izotope so we get updates? How does it work? Are the programs I own getting ported into my Izotope account? Here is the letter I just received from Exponential which says it's my last contact as Exponential:

Some Exciting News
Hello. This note is going out to customers of Exponential Audio and to people who’ve been interested in Exponential products. I have very big news and I’ll share that with you just a little later on in this message. But first I’d like to reminisce with you.

I created Exponential Audio in 2012 and released PhoenixVerb and R2 a year later. Over time that grew into a portfolio of 12 plugins. I hoped for a modest level of success at best: no one could have been more surprised at the growth of the company than I have been. You may not know this, but Exponential Audio has always been fundamentally one person. It was up to me to design and code the plugins, market and sell them, and then to address issues that may have come up. If you contacted Exponential with a question or problem, then you were talking with me. But as any company grows, each of those responsibilities needs more effort and focus; a time comes to take a next step. It’s that time for Exponential Audio.

I’ve known for a while that Exponential Audio would outgrow me and would need a new home. I looked at lots of other companies and considered their many strengths. There are plenty of good companies out there, but the first one that really excited me was iZotope. I’m happy to tell you that sometimes things work out just the way you’d like. iZotope is the new home of Exponential Audio! I’m excited to be working with them, and I’ll be working with iZotope for quite some time. I’m helping with new products and you can still catch me at shows and presentations. But you’ll also be hearing new names and seeing new faces. They are capable and energetic, and I’d like you to give them a big welcome.

Change can be challenging and you’re going to see some changes in Exponential Audio. But you will see a continued dedication to quality and innovation. We share the same ethical sensibilities and drive toward excellence. Most importantly you’re going to see some really exciting new developments that I’d have never been able to accomplish by myself. You’ll see one change right away: the Exponential Audio website will disappear, with the best of its content moving over to iZotope. All of our support and informational email addresses will be going to iZotope (to tell the truth, they’ve been there for months already). We’ll benefit from iZotope’s much larger group of product specialists and large dealer portfolio and you—if you haven’t already—will have a chance to learn about some of the indispensable products iZotope has been making for years. And don’t worry about your Exponential Audio licenses. They’re still good and you can keep using them as long as you like.

I did say that Exponential Audio was fundamentally a one-person company and that’s true. But no one does everything alone. I’ve had some great partners who have helped me grow. There isn’t enough space here to thank all of the new friends I’ve made along the way. So let me thank all of you for letting Exponential Audio become part of your toolkit. And thanks to my family for a deep well of support that never ran dry.

Sincerely,

Michael Carnes

The whole thing happened today.. less than 12 hours ago.
Relax! All will be made clear very soon and your questions will be answered.

Tapwatr 3rd April 2019 02:35 PM

Interesting, I always wondered why iZotope hadn't really gotten into the reverb market. Might have to jump at the 50% off Symphony deal I see in my account.

mmorcos 3rd April 2019 02:52 PM

I can't see an upgrade path in Izotope's website as used to be in Exponential Audio webpage.

Kuba_Pietrzak 3rd April 2019 03:02 PM

Thank you Marti for the "direct report".

I could imagine, that from business standpoint, such a company like "Exponential Audio" would need a strong partner with good marketing and sales department, so Mr Michael Carnes could concentrate on products and development.

big fan of both companies, this should be excellent! New exponential prices are also great.

That's not what he said in the email, this has been happening for months already. The website vanishing and getting an email today is not how it should be done to be quite honest. I don't understand why you telling me to "Relax" also, all I'm doing is asking questions about how this is going to be handled...I'm part of the group of people that don't have his phone number after he sends out an email saying this is the last Exponential Audio contact.

dr.sound 3rd April 2019 05:40 PM

Let me make it much more to the point:
Please be patient. All your questions will be answered,
You aren't the first with a question nor the last.
I'm trying to put things in perspective hence the "relax".
If you don't want to "relax" that's fine.
Ignore if you want but either way you have to wait for your answer.

So this is why they stopped support for the M7 Control plugin. Very disappointed about that.

The licenses don't change. If you've got a plugin and want to download the update from iZotope, then it's still going to work. And remember that Exponential added machine authorization the first of this year. You've still got that option. The only thing you're going to notice in the plugin update is a tweak to the logo and the documentation.

The website vanishing is the sort of short-term thing that happens when you reassign a domain. You should notice that the website now redirects to iZotope. They'll eventually get tutorials and content so that's available again. Just takes some time.

That's exactly right. Izotope has people who actually know how to do all of those things. I just made it up as I went along; it was OK, but could have been better. I'll be able to focus more on the stuff I'm best at.

I'm sure our friends at Bricasti are looking for another partner to provide a control plugin. And I'm sure whoever they find will do a fine job of it. In the meantime, there's no reason to think that M7Control won't run for years.

@ Michael Carnes

On izotope's site, it shows that all plugins (not just Phoenixverb) can use iLok CPU licensing now. Is this correct or an error?

That's correct. Actually made the change in December/January. You've got to have an installer of that vintage or younger and a current version of iLok License Manager. PACE also needs to "see" the license so they can update the terms. Probably the easiest way is to deactivate the plugin and then reactivate it.

Pro:
I think iZotopes GUIs are much nicer than the GUIs in exponential audio products. I hope we will see a very nice update here in the near future.

Con:
iZotope have not had the best history in keeping things compatible, with RX you get a new set of plugs for every release, it's a bit annoying to me to have to keep a complete set of old plugs with every release just for compatibility's sake. I relly hope they improve this.

fgimian 4th April 2019 10:27 AM

Excited to see this acquisition. I absolutely adore R2 that I got on the Focusrite promotion and have been looking at upgrading to R4 but there are a few reasons I haven't which I hope Izotope will address:

* Just a single iLok authorization (unlike all other companies which provide 2).
* UIs, particularly the preset browser could really use a talented graphic designer and usability expert.
* The price was too high to justify given R2 was already so good, specifically with the single authorisation which feels a bit user hostile to me.

Congratulations to Michael and interested to see what happens in the future!

That's my number one compliant with iZotope also.

Still with the same lie.
Cranesong, MDW, Nugen, Cargo Cult, Dolby, TC Electronic, Zynaptiq, etc.

You don't get 2.

Fair point, I should have said ‘most’ instead of ‘all’. Fortunately, all other iLok plugins I have purchased provide 2 and this is a prerequisite for future iLok purchases.

So I have Revibe, TL Space, Atliverb XL, and all the verbs in Waves Mercury. Any advantages of also getting Exponential Audio's reverbs for post?
I've been watching their videos and while it's impressive, would it really add to my arsenal?

Of the ones you've listed, none of them do 7.1 or greater unlike Exponential Audio's offerings with PhoenixVerb Surround, Stratus, Symphony, Stratus 3D, Symphony 3D.

I stay to the cleaner side of his reverbs (though I do have his more character reverbs, they get less use) but Stratus right now is my favourite for very clean tails. And it folds down beautifully. And the dynamic tail suppression was something I had been looking for in a reverb for a while (vs automating that in.) I also own all the reverbs you mentioned plus Acon Digital Verberate Surround and still Stratus tends to be my go to.

Solar 5th April 2019 01:10 PM

True, read the news yesterday and this can only be a good news (crossfinger) as both companies are amazing. kfhkh

Benmrx 5th April 2019 05:07 PM

I've always been a bit confused on which Exponential Audio Reverb is most geared towards post for creating believable spaces/rooms for placing dialogue, foley, matching ADR, etc.

Did a little more digging around last night and found a few posts praising Stratus for general post production reverb duties.

Now..., in all honesty I'm not a wizard when it comes to designing my own reverbs, which is one reason I've leaned so heavily on Altiverb..., because..., well it has those handy dandy pictures for reference. However, I would love more flexibility with reverb in my sessions, especially when it comes to automation, changing perspective, etc.

So, in short, for those that own Stratus (or use any EA reverb for post), do they come with a fair amount of presets for things like bedrooms, bathrooms, medium office spaces, cars, etc.? I do love Altiverb because it's so easy to get a decent sound quick that does a fairly good job in placing the sounds, however it's not the most flexible option. FWIW, I do have the original Pheonix verb, and although I don't hate it, I never fell in love with it, and always wished it had a more focused set of presets for post.
