Stam Audio SA-EQP1A Equalizer

Hi! We are very proud to announce The SA-EQP1A, one of our most ambitious projects to date. Until now, there wasn’t any product that would truly respect the sound and legacy the iconic tube EQ has been offering since the 50’s. At least not without a hefty price-tag.

At the beginning, we were not sure if we wanted to build an exact replica of the EQP1/A or the popular MEQ-5. In the end, we opted to fusion both into a single unit, thus adding the coveted mid-section of the MEQ5 (200hz to 7khz) into the EQPQ/A.

https://i.imgur.com/5oA2Jvw.jpg

OPTIMAL COMPONENTS
Our version uses the exact circuit topology, with the option to add or bypass the mid section of the popular Pultec MEQ-5. Unlike other replicas, we didn’t settle for two transformers (input/output) and decided to respect the original three transformer configuration using an inter-stage transformer: a critical piece to get that superb low-end, silky high-end and tonal shaping heaven, with the bonus of making the unit even more stable, providing a consistent performance and a lower noise-floor.
Every single knob thoroughly follows the ratio and frequency response of the timeless classic but we also added an output gain dial so that two units can be matched at ease for stereo operation.

With the aid of a premium Cinemag input and a inter-stage transformer as well as a Sowter output transformer, Cinemag Inductors, JJ tubes and a fully discrete class A circuit with premium Vishay capacitors, we accomplished our goal: To offer the authentic sound palette and functionality at an affordable price.

The timeless technique of boosting and attenuating at the same time, to make use of the unit’s sweet EQ curves, can now be in your hands, and in your studio.

This is my reward for holding off on the Warm and Klark Teknik offerings for as long as I did! Can't wait for mine to ship out!

Less announcing, more making products that were due months ago!

I'm just pulling your chain Josh. I am excited to see a new full rackmount Pultec style equalizer for under $1,000!

rick2630 11th January 2018 01:58 PM

Lovely idea to put the mid band into it. Congratulation kfhkh

SEED78 11th January 2018 02:26 PM

very cool about the mid band! - and thats its 2U.

I already know the answer to this, but any chance of a stereo version? good you have the volume matching on each unit.

A stereo version would be the winning ticket, surely? I can imagine that a lot of people would be wanting to use it on the master buss. Such a space & time saver to have it in stereo 2u unit. kfhkh

SEED78 12th January 2018 08:00 AM

Even if the stereo unit was 3/4u I'd be interested.

doom64 12th January 2018 04:35 PM

It is a shame that the mid band is cut only. Ahh well, still a cool feature.

I'm not bummed at all. 99% of the time I only use the mid dip on the MEQ5. The mid boosts are nothing to write home about. Give me the helios 69, neve or API mid boost any day. The mid-dip on the pultec is extremely useful!

AlmaxMere 13th January 2018 12:06 AM

Very nice! Stereo would be ace, but I'll let 2 of them take up my rack space!

sam guaiana 13th January 2018 04:10 AM

What won't this guy build next?!

Oh right, the 2ch Neve he promised me for free over a year ago...

Completely unnecessary post and of bad taste I might add

If you have a problem with me or want that free unit you have my email address, this is not the place and you have not written to me in 7 months.

Your posts makes me reconsider why I should give you my work for free, particularly not with this kind of attitude. I am a man of my word but this is pushing it a little.

Why were you getting free hardware?

Sam cancelled all his pre orders last year due to my delays in shipping them (rightly so)

I offered a dual 1073 free of charge as a gift for him to try our products and hopefully restore a business relationship as I obviously let him down, this was a private offer by the way.

I get hundreds of emails a day and hundreds of orders a month so I forgot about this but was happy to honor this for the next batch of 1073's, I didn't hear from him in several months and I honestly forgot about this, it's as easy as sending me an email and this could have been avoided.

McWreckinBall 13th January 2018 08:31 PM

Just pre-ordered two! Damn you Josh... :)

hiccup 13th January 2018 10:11 PM

Hey Joshua,
If you can make one with the 70hz boost (like the eqp1s3) I’ll buy 2 right now.

Yep. I'm pretty sure the EQP1S3 is the same circuit as the EQP1A3 but with the 70hz boost at the bottom instead of the 60hz boost.

What are the chances?

I cant change it just for one client unfortunately

70hz and 60hz is pretty much the same to me

Well, damn. Feel free to send me the dual 1073. Even if it takes until the year 2020.

I agree.

For me, 80Hz is very different from 60Hz - when I think 60Hz I think of Pultecs and when I think of 80Hz shelving I think of standard mixing desks low shelf.

That said sometimes 50Hz is very useful .... where does it end gooof

It's a good thing he did NOT pursue that gratuity -- you're vengeful and inappropriate (don't post private agreements in public. Ever.) approach makes you a risky client.

No, it's pushing a lot. My advice: cease ties with this person.

There was talk on the Facebook announcement about mid-range boost being possible:

First, a big +1 from me. If you DON'T add it then you may lose sales on it.

If you do, it will put your EQ above that of the original hardware pieces! It already isn't true to the original so you may as well put a boost in where Pultec should have. I highly doubt anyone who pre-ordered would object. Is it cost holding back that decision?

If you guys would also like to see a mid boost control thumbs this post up!
