Is layering fundamental in todays techno/house production?

Hi Rob, a beginner here but I am fan of your work for a long time.

Well my question is simple: is layering kicks and snares a must? or can big thick sounds be achieved just with a single sound source?

If not layering what are other techniques for achieving those powerfull kicks?

Thanks.

hmmmmm i dont layer at all... i use 1 kick, and i use 1 snare or clap...

sometimes i add a second, but its really rare.

if you make the right choice of your sound, then why need to layer ?
