Emulator II - the famous 80s sampler

For me the most iconic sampler from the 80s.
Used by my favorite groups Depeche Mode, Human League , New Order or in the soundtrack Terminator II....

I have recorded a small demo with some famous sounds:

Merry Christmas!

One day... may be..

Thank you! Yes the EII is really the great iconic sampler of the 80s, I wish I will have an EII one day to resample my synths through for that special LoFi sound.

Merry Christmas!

Sold mine this year after 25 years and all I can say is:

"This will take a while..."

Haha I remember that. I had 2 of them at different points in my life. I still miss it. If I got one again I'd have to do the HD. I had 100s of disks that I unfortunately tossed at one point. Painful.

Nice demo!

Just for the record, there's no Emulator in Terminator II. That score was
almost entirely done on two Fairlight CMI systems. Brad Fiedel did however use an Emulator I for the original 1984 score.

Do you know of any other movies that feature an Emulator I/II in it's score?

Yeah, I went the Sound Designer route. Acquired an old Mac LCII. (I called it the McChicken, because that's what I paid for it).

600 floppys fit on about 1/3 of a CD-R.

Was all I wanted in the late 80's... but it strayed a dream.

Absolutely. One question that's been killing me tho:

On your short intro sequence there is this low metallic stab that plays, like at 0:02. Its the exact same sound from that movie 2010. Do you recall where you found that sound? Was it some sort of preset?

Cheers.

Haha, I even found the preset in FM8 in the FM7 Legacy library. Score!

Incredible! I love the Emulator II.

Does anyone know if there were ever samples of the EII made for the Kurzweill K2500?

Ah. You know, I've been wondering that myself.

Kind of sounds a bit like a sample from one of them blaster beam thingies too!

..... and mix it with a soft pad and you have the (in)famous Liquid Stack.

eddy72 31st January 2016 11:53 AM

Liquid Stack?

LightBlue 31st January 2016 07:39 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Yes, the one from the OMI Volume 2, Expensive Synth Stack set.

In the attached file, I’ve played a few notes using one of the lower Liquid Stack samples taken from my Emulator II, with the next set of notes played with the Stratotron patch from my TX-802 (with a reduced release time).

There are clearly other sounds present in Liquid Stack, (obvious given its name) but the Stratotron patch seems to be the basis. The choir sound is suspiciously like one of the Fairlight choirs and they may have added to the attack, as it’s more pronounced than the Stratotron coming from my TX.

Playing the other Liquid Stack samples, some subtle repeats can be heard that don’t sound like loop points, so it may well be that the samples were recorded with a delay line engaged.

sounds "effen" stellar, I had one in the early 90's but had to give it up because the drive was temperamental and wasn't as good a condition as the one you got. but man was it organic- for a digital sampler its a funny word to use i know but a few from that era share that attribute and the emulator is one of the best for sure.
