Opinions on 7.1, 9.1, 11.1 surround processors

What is your opinion about 9.1 and 11.1 sound processors like audyssey DSX? I was setting up my 5.1 home theater and noticed many people use processors to add additional height channels and wide channels. I have heard prologic and it sounds like crap. I have not been able to properly compare them but it seems to me like marketing hype. I mix music and don't have much experience with surround but I think an altered mix is more likely to sound worse. Most theaters still use 5.1. I just wanted to get some opinions on this subject from people that have mixed 5.1 and 7.1.

If you have a dedicated home theater that is set up with proper acoustic treatment, I would not go any further than 7.1. At least for me the stuff I have heard in 7.1 has not really improved the experience of watching a film significantly from a good 5.1 system, but if you are a complete audio freak who buys lots of Blu-Ray discs, 7.1 might be worth it.

Anything above that and you're just burning money to have some fun.

I know Tomlinson Holman has been trying to push 10.2
Spoke to about it at a screening a few weeks ago and he's been working on it for sometime now.

That's a lot of speakers.

What does the .2 even mean?

Means. Two Low Freq Effects channels, instead of only one, like the one 5.1 has. As we have difficulties to detect low frequency geographical position, the use of more than one sub-woofer is controversial.
