Ive done a fair bit of game cutscene work where you have to take an actors voice however it was recorded, and place it 'outside' if the scene happens to take place there.
Tricks I use:
-a vst plug-in called proximity which allows distancing of sounds.
-impulse response reverbs with envelopes over the ir. I find that if you take an ir with a fair bit of reflection, and draw an envelope over it that fades in very quickly, and is then 'notched' after 10-30 ms with after it another short burst of the ir, and then faded out, you can simulate distance quite well that sounds 'outside'.
Plugins like waves ir and sir allow this.
-EQ matching - ADR a few words of location recorded dialogue and use an EQ matcher to match the frequency spectrum. Then use some delay or use proximity to get some distance.
- some plugins like guitar rig have various micing options for cabs; turn off all other fx and use the mic placement feature to get some distance.
- use hrtf ir's
