Question: I will be recording a podcast with 4 people, it will be about an hour long, and it will go live within 2 hours of wrapping. Clearly I’ll have very little time for post work, so I want to really strategize about how I’m recording it. I’ll need the mix to ultimately sit at -18LKFS.

First, I’m trying to figure out what to use to meter the individual channels and the full mix in real time, and which metering type to choose in pro tools. Do I have an LKFS plugin on each channel that I monitor in real-time, or do I rely on pro tools channel meters.

You should use a loudness meter on the full mix, but also you should set your monitoring level so you know that when it sounds good to your ears in your room, you’re already hitting spec. You can just find a podcast that you think sounds good and set your monitoring level based on that and leave it. Test everything ahead of time, set all your levels and any processing so when you record you’re already hitting the mark and you know it sounds good.
