I feel like I also should have this "auto write" problem. What exactly is it?

When you 'write to selection' (button in automation window) without having a selection, it writes to the entire track length without warning, which you will find out about when it's too late.

exactly, or you have to have warnings enabled, which means everytime you write to selection a requester appears, you have to read it and press enter when it says you are going to write to selection, or press... enter (sic!) when it says you are going to write to the whole track. and then press UNDO.

i can graphically see the size and shape of the requester and i know when it writes to selection and when it says the opposite. still have to press enter though... hundreds of time every day

guardian angel reads the requester for you and presses enter for you if it's going to write to selection.

Hmm. I have the warnings off, and I guess I trained myself to abide by PT rules to not write without a selection.

Guardian Angel for Pro Tools 2018.1

I just tested TheGuardianAngel with the new 2018.1 release:
It works, it's save to upgrade Pro Tools.

Guardian Angel

What is the Guardian Angel for Pro Tools?

In Pro Tools you can easily destroy a whole automation track when using "Preview" + "Write to Selection".

There are 3 common scenarios to trigger this accident:

(1) You made your selection after issuing the play command:

(2) You made no selection or accidentally a zero-lenth selection.

(3) You accidentally activated insertion follows playback after issuing the play command.

In all three scenarios Pro Tools will write the parameters to the whole session length.

In Pro Tools preferences you can enable "write-to warnings" and Pro Tools will warn you for every write-to command.

Unfortunately these warnings appear at every write-to command, also on the 99,5% correctly issued oness
so you end reading hundreds of message boxes and confirming hundreds of message boxes with "ok".

And that's where the Guardian Angel helps you:

It will remove the unnecessary selection based warnings and just keep the dangerous ones.

I've definitely been screwed by accidental selection when writing to selection.

I can't figure out; Pro Tools gives me a warning when writing (you can't undo this operation), but I can only click "okay", nothing else.
Is there a way to not execute writing when getting the warning?

Here for the gear

Afaik you need to execute and undo.
If you do not undo direct afterwards, there is no way back.
