Talking How do you like your music stems

When getting stems from a film composer, what do you actually ask him to provide? (BTW, I am talking about stereo stems not 5.1).

Which formats ?

Instrument groups or one stereo file ?

Dry= Without limiting, reverb or EQ on the master?

Cheers,

Adu

Your pre-mix stems should add together when played back at unity to create your mix. This means that each should include the reverb or effects for those instruments that you intend to be on your mix.

However, they definitely should not include limiting or anything to boost the level. They also do not need lots of bus comp/eq. Make the internal mix decisions, and leave any overall processing to the dub stage where the re-recording engineer will have the perspective to see how it should belnd with effects and dialog.

As for separating the stereo pairs, a good place to start if using 8 channels is to have any percussion instruments on a pair, then rhythm instruments, lead instruments (melodies, or vocals if it's a vocal track), and strings.
