What is Instagram doing to audio?!

Does anybody know of any specs or 'best practice' advice from Instagram? What it does to audio is pretty criminal but I have to use it despite.

I've found that it clips pretty badly, perhaps as a result of summing to mono?

As a work around we just pop the master bus down 6deebs but a better understanding of what's happening might be useful if anyone can help.

Thanks!
