Bizarre frame rate sync issue

I just finished mixing this indie short and I exported the stereo track out of Pro tools. I gave it to the director and he put the track in final cut to put it to video and export the final video. Problem is, severe audio sync drift.

Turns out inside PT10 the framerate is somehow 30.1 FPS, which is crazy to me, I have no idea how thats even possible. The audio is totally in sync thru the whole film in PT, but it drifts very quickly in final cut. Any idea how this is possible?

Also, just checked, and the initial MP4 video I used is in fact 29.97. The new .mov he gave me is somehow 30.1.

I used the same session as the MP4 exactly, just imported the new video and the audio was still in sync fine in PT with the new .mov. But it's not in sync on his laptop in FCP. WTF?!?!

Did you give him a wav file?

Sometimes, depending on the capture settings in FCP, if the audio is imported into the FCP sequence via drag n drop there will be a sample rate conversion applied, whereas if they choose Import from the File Menu this does not happen.

Weird, but definitely something to test.

Good luck!

So I bounced the final mix as a quicktime movie file and everything is perfectly in sync. Just to test it, I then imported that bounced .mov back into PT and it's still 30.1, just in sync. <3 Sync issues...

Tell your editor to check if the audio and video settings are the same as his sequence in the Final Cut PREFERENCES.

Just had this issue the other day... If they mismatch, FC starts some weird conversion under the hood.

Hope that solves it!
