My (slut inspired) desk build

Thanks to the many gearslutz who constructed their own desks and posted pics. Back in July I built my own.

Thanks for the inspiration!! Hope you enjoy.

The main issue:
I was having workflow problems with a small desk and rack on the side

The big problem
There was no way I was going to pay the high price for a desk from a company.

The DIY solution
I got all of this done under $300.

The "top" is a 7 ft solid wood door with no "knob" hole ($64).

The frame for the "base" was cut from a smaller door ($36).

The racks were cut from 2 mdf particle boards ($35 total). The center bridge was cut from the scraps.

1 gallon black enamel semi-gloss paint ($32)

The rest of the budget was misc. items (brushes, rollers, wood screws, finishing nails, wood glue, L brackets...etc).

Stage 2. Cut racks from particle board. Sorry, forgot to take pics here. All I have is the finished pic.

Put control surface on to take measurements for the center bridge

Hi !
Cool design and good job !
But… are you sure that the tweeters don't throw up above your ears ?
You'd want to have them at ears level, no ?

Thanks. Yeah, I was so use to having my gear upright in a rolling rack that I kinda went down one track and didn't consider the final height until close to the end. The first build ended up being so tall because the X-Desk is about 7U high.

At first it was cool as I do a lot of night mixing while the wife and kids sleep. I would mix through my cans and then check on the monitors at low levels. I had to stand up for the monitors to be close to ear level as you stated. That was ok (for a while), I would move around the room to other spots and listen. Ultimately I was like, "This sucks big time."

So......I had some time a couple of weeks ago to re-work my desk properly. I just had to get used to the flush layout and having to readjust how I'd grown accustomed to looking at the knobs and faders.

Surprisingly within a few days I got the hang of it. Monitors are in a proper position and having my gear directly on the sides/closer has been a big plus. I was so excited I even installed some track lighting. lol
