I'm having a lot of requests to see the new studio when it's finished...........I'll be holding an open day for any interested Dutch (or Belgium, German etc) slutz who want to come and check it out!

If you're interested, please email me ( dariusvh at gmail.com )

Hey Darius,

This is very interesting to me and the best mastering studio construction tread thumbsup.

The Merford door looks nice (I think there is also one installed in Jet Studio, Brussels).

I have a lot of respect for your mastering work. (heb wel enkele CD'tjes thuis liggen die van wisseloord komen)

If there would be some place left for me during the opening, I would like the join the other slutz.

Keep us informed of the building progress.....

Greets,
Davy (Antwerp, Belgium)

Darius, what function does the roll asphalt serve? Is it a deadening layer between courses of sheetrock? Thanks.

Hi Xaos,

It's main use is to manage the resilience level of the gypsum layers of insulation ( Resilience - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) so that the energy stored by the structure is not released as re-emission for example (so, it is a form of dampening). It allow better behaviour of the insulation at low frequencies and better overall behaviour of the structure. In this particular case, the Asphalt used is around 7kg/m².

Hi Darius,

I am really looking forward to seeing some new photos from your mastering studio. It looks fantastic so far – without any compromise. I hope that the offer to come to your studio is still on – finally I might be able to visit you! Fingers crossed that it all works out. Greetings from The Czech Republic. Jiri Paska

PS: One question – aren´t you gonna miss daylight?

Very nice Darius! Thomas rocks!

I'm doing this more or less alone and time frame for the inside of my (smaller) studio is about 2 months..

How many people do you have working (5 days, 6 days?)

More photos coming tomorrow - haven't had time in the last few days to get over there.

@ Jiri....................thanks!..............i hope we can meet in person soon!
re: daylight........i considered it, but because of the extra cost and the acoustic compromises, i decided against...............also, i take lots of breaks and the rest of the building is very bright and light (well, by Dutch standards, anyway!) so i feel ok about it. I don't think this is the last mastering studio i'll build, so maybe next time!

@Herwig............thanks!..........Thomas is a great guy............I'm very lucky to have found him and Niels (the contractor) and Jacques (architect who helped me negotiate with the contractor!)

There's 2 guys doing the main work (brothers Kees & Bert).....plus specialist airco, electrics people when necassary. Bert & Kees have been busy about 5 weeks (working 5 day weeks) and should have about another 3 to go.........these guys are great..........very slow, careful, methodical......tidy even!

Hi PJ,

No particular plans to add to the gear-list right now, although of course there's always things i would like (Maselec EQ, Crookwood router, Fairman EQ)......but i'm very happy with the sound of my setup so it's not a priority.

(BTW, the gear in my Wiss' photo is not up to date - MP gone, C2 gone, v-mu gone)

Impressive to see a high standard studio being build from ground up. Thanks for sharing.

How long will it appr. take working in that studio until the investment is returned and you start winning (obviously based on your current rates/work)? Is it a high risk for you and your family or rather a small to medium matter of expense compared to what you had to invest into gear?

Tyrone, Timur, thanks!

@Timur: I don't consider it high risk, otherwise i wouldn't have done it. I already own all the gear, and the building will increase in value. So that just leaves the building costs, which it should be possible to earn back in a couple of years if things roll nicely.

I could have done this all on a more more modest scale, but the bigger the gamble, the bigger the possible return.......who dares wins etc.

Nothing earth-shattering to report, just good steady progress.

Can I get some dimensions on those diffusers you built? Or at least the calculations you used to make them?

Hi Jay,

The diffusors used in Darius's studio are a variation of our Omni Diffusor Model .9 - which were adapted during the design phase to meet exactly the technical requirements of Darius's room (variations in depth, width etc).

They use a proprietary design, which implies that we cannot divulge any specifications or detailed information about them.
