Meanwhile; In Germany, the team are building another studio partially in a house.

Here is a first video of the progress so far.

Communication can be quite confusing to the onlooker, we have four languages in use on site at the moment, English, Portuguese, Spanish, and some German.

Let it be known. Miguel doesn’t like being filmed with his glasses on, so we make sure we film him with his glasses on.

We hope you find it interesting. We do.

In Portugal it was time to say goodbye to the beach, pack the tools and get rolling.
Stashing an iPad in the tool boxes allows us to GPS track their progress.

I’m not sure that a TN-C system was supposed to be used all over a residencial installation. It was supposed to be on the power company’s lines and split at the incoming. That would be a sérios source of noise on the lines.

That means we have to re-wire.

Half the house was wired live to earth with floating neutral cables, some boards have live on the neutral conductor also.

I’d come to expect that kind of wiring disaster in Southern Europe, not Germany. Oh well, we live and learn, well, we live.

This team have been building studios for a while now.

Joules, first pro studio build 1984 (Jacobs studios Farnham U.K. Court Studio)
Miguel, first pro studio build 1992 (Regiestudio Amadora Portugal)
Gari, first pro studio build 2000 (Boom Studios Porto Portugal)
Picho, first pro studio build 2004 (Vigo university Spain)
Joe, first pro studio build 1987 (st Thomas’s studio Blackburn UK)
Kris (the new guy) first studio build 2018 (Metrica Ibiza)

No wonder they are all going mad.

While we had a small break in the summer, we came up with a new in-house engineered power distribution system for the site.
I can’t emphasise how important it is to have safe reliable power for the site, and also to have good, bright even lighting.
You can’t do good quality work in poor lighting, and at 230v a bad power system can be deadly.
Unreliable power can be dangerous, tools stopping unexpectedly can leave workers in a very dangerous position.
It’s well worth spending a bit on adequate power and lighting, it makes a big difference

Build quality and attention to detail looks superb. Seeing the experience of the crew in previous builds, it is understandable. The framing of the CR front wall is spot on accurate, as far as I can tell in the photos. Love the downward slope from the CR to the lower level LR. Can't wait to see the glass installed there. The quality of the lumber looks extremely high as well, which is important when precision means everything. Nice work indeed!

Thanks.
The front wall framing is my own carpentry work. It was a case of it being easier to just make it than do it all in CAD and figure it out then have to pass half a dozen pages of drawings on to the rest of the team.
Although I am an electro-acoustic engineer (and sound engineer) my "other job" is carpentry and cabinet making, so this combines the best of all worlds for me.

The design of the front wall "look" was also done as I went along, it was changed from a generic flat (in the vertical) frame to an inclined upper section to improve the visual aspects.

There is something really amazing about actually designing as you go with the physical materials and the tactile side of things gives you great feedback to put into future concepts and designs.

Even though the overall Design was a Philip Newell design, these days he just passes me some basic sketches of the concept, we have a chat about it, and I just get on with it, so there is a degree of flexibility in the detail of the concept that can be fine tuned on-site. Other studios (Like the Switzerland project) are all my design work.

The window tunnel is a flying tunnel hung off the control room front wall structure and it "floats" through the structural concrete wall of the house without touching the house structure. This reduces transmission to the house compared with using an intermediate (third) middle window and frame, but reduces room to room isolation. In this case the overall concern was sound leakage into the house where the family are living, and to neighbouring properties, rather than from the control room to the performance space.

Although the front wall was my carpentry work I must emphasize that the work of the rest of the team is of equally high standard and their carpentry skills (And other work) are just as good, it makes for a very efficient and flexible team not having to allocate just one person to the finest work, we can overlap tasks and just hold one person in one area doing various jobs but taking credit for the whole room or section of the studio, while at the same time guaranteeing the standard of the result is maintained.

It's wonderful that other folks enjoy watching our builds (in pictures and video) and that it actually inspires folks to do stuff, or helps them resolve problems and questions they have. That's what keeps us posting up the videos and pictures.

That explains the intricate detailed work. Cabinetry and woodworking skills... I finished my studio build earlier this year and did all the work myself, with a few days of sporadic help on heavy items, like I-joists and such. Took two years start to finish (ground up from grass/dirt). I know the planning, work and double/triple-checking of things along the way. I designed every detail in Sketchup before my build started, so that helped tremendously. I do appreciate following a build such as yours, especially when the painstaking details are at such a high level, as I work that way myself. Once again, looking great!
