Laundry Room Records - New Studio Build

The time has come and this weekend I started my new studio build. We recently moved to Atlanta and I'm fortunate to have a nice size basement. Ceilings are pretty tall at 9' and the raw space I have to work with is roughly 13' x 26'.

Dimensions are challenging in that the length is twice the width. I've flip flopped between a larger multi purpose room and a smaller control room with an iso booth. There is a structural column in the middle of the space that challenges me even further but I've settled on a multi purpose room since I'm used to a work flow that way. I'm still tweaking the length of the inside shell but I realize I'm going to have significant acoustic treatment.

I'll have large bass traps in the front and back and thick treatment along the side walls. All treatment will be covered in fabric and then wooden slats.

Hvac will be a mini split and fresh air will likely come in from an adjacent portion of my air conditioned basement via an exhaust fan with baffles although I'm still entertaining a ERV/HRV.

I've attached a working plan for reference.

This weekend I started with beefing up the floor deck above my space. I'm using 3 layers of 1/2" sheet rock with backer rod and acoustic caulk along all of the joints in between my floor joists.

THIS IS TEDIOUS WORK! A 12' run is taking me about 2 hours.

Man do I understand the TEDIOUS WORK part! Seems to go hand in hand with building a studio!

More drywall between the joists....

Definitely am feeling a difference with footfall from the living room above.

If you don't mind asking, where did you get the RISC clips?

Thanks. I had checked them out previously online. Good to see someone using their products. I may do the same when the time comes once I get to that stage.

I started work on one portion of soffit. These soffits are needed to isolate existing ducts and pipes that could not be moved.

I'll be doing dual soffits in some areas and the inside soffit will be completely decoupled from the outside soffit. In the tray ceiling portion that remains I'll be hanging clouds with integrated lighting.

Got my hvac quote today. Was between a Mitsubishi me slim and a Fujitsu mini split. Specs are very similar across the board and specifically the noise specs between both units are practically identical. On low speed both units are supposed to be about 22db.

Fujitsu is about $500 cheaper and that's what I'm going with. Had a Fujitsu mini split cassette unit in my old room and it was fantastic.

Picked up a drywall hoist from Harbour Freight today. This thing is surprisingly robust. Sure beats trying to lift by hand or renting at $30 per day.

And when I'm done I can sell on Craigslist.

Got side tracked with some of the wife's projects but I'm back on track.

More soffit framing work today but this is the last of the funky framing for the existing pipes and duct work serving the rest of the house. I'm on to insulation and the first layer of drywall for my outer shell.

Finished all the outer shell soffit framing. Got them insulated and pretty much finished the 1st later of drywall.

Now it's back to adding drywall between the ceiling joists. It will be very tedious and I've been putting it off.

Got all the old electrical rats nests out and ive got a temp lighting and outlet circuit.

More Sheetrock between the joists this weekend. It's mind numbing with the cutting and caulking.

Should finish this by next weekend and then I'll add 2 more layers of sheet rock on the outside shell.

2 more runs between the joists and I'm done with this phase. Need to order more acoustic caulk. I'm blowing thru the stuff.

Tomorrow I'm hanging wall sheet rock. It'll be the first time the room is fully enclosed.

2nd layer of Sheetrock for the outer shell is going up. Definitely can feel a difference in isolation already.
