Red Feather Recording New Build

So its been a while since I've posted in here. My wife and I have purchased a new home with enough land for me to build my new studio from the ground up! Exciting isn't it! haha.

Anyway I am posting here to get you guys thoughts on the layout. I know there are lots of variables to a great studio and many different thoughts on how it should be done but I feel i have a good starting point and am just wanting people to point out any mistakes or misses though the process before I'm stuck with them.

Fingers crossed construction should start within a month and be finished to a workable point by january. so here is where Im at so far with the layout and My Control room design is one of the "Stock" designs I've found around.

Looking forward to a great build with the insight of true professionals.

Thanks

BTW my building will be 30'x40' with 12'exterior walls. 4:12 roof pitch on the 30'side. Steel building with 4" insulation in the exterior walls and 6" in the roof. Of course everything will be built inside of this structure.

Experienced some small setbacks so far as far as overall budget and an unused septic plot on the property I can't build over. Luckily this has all been simple to overcome but nerve racking none the less. I am now looking at a poll barn structure. Will still be strong and provide a little more interior clearance all around. The poll barn also reduces some of my construction cost by about 1/3 of a steel building. So that fixed a budget hiccup.

More updates to come and I'm sure more obstacles to come as well.

UPDATE!

Here are some recent pictures. I did a pretty awful job at updating this thread. Took me about a year building this place by myself. Went a little over budget to get it where it is and still have a few things I want to do. I will upload some construction pics as well just don't have them available on my computer at the moment. Im pretty proud of what I have built and it sounds great as well!!!

Here is a good update and pretty much the current status of the studio. Still some things I want to do to finish it off but I'm extremely happy with the studio!

Cool! Nice and vibey! How much isolation do you get through exterior walls to the outside?

It's pretty good. Not perfect but I was on a budget and went over a little. When my band is practicing my neighbor can faintly hear us in his garage. I think had I been able to build with block walls it probably would be near perfect. No one seems to be bothered though.

This is the final layout for the studio housed in a 30’x40’ pole barn with open cell spray insulation about 7” thick. I think it worked well but next time, if space allows I would extend the building to say 30x 55 and make larger ISO’s. 14x14 or so ISO’s would be nice! Amp cabs and drums are taking up some space!

This is awesome stuff, kickdrummer.

I'm thinking about moving to a location where I can have my studio at my house and one consideration is a pole barn house and studio. What was the total cost of building your studio?

Total cost was 40-45k. Total buildout. Sorry getting back to you so late on that I don’t seem to get emails on posts or maybe they get lost in the shuffle. Building is still doing great and serving it purpose well! I did add some awnings over the entrances to help with some water damage I was getting around exterior door frames. Other than that it’s working great and shocks the client every time they walk in!

That's awesome.

I'm still looking for my new home where I can do something similar. How close is your neighbor who can hear you?

Probably a little over 200 feet away. That room is also on an outside wall with no other rooms between it. The neighbor across the street has told me they don’t even notice any noise.

Damn. Hoping to check out a place with a large pole barn looking structure, but it's maybe 100 feet to two neighbors.

Well depending on how big it is if you put the main “live room” well enough inside the exterior walls I don’t see why you could t get enough isolation. Maybe with rooms or a hallway around to reduce the transfer. Pretty hard to sound proof one of these buildings but I feel I got a pretty good reduction of sound outside. Not perfect but standing outside you can tell there is music but not what it is. Mostly low end rumble. No where near as loud as a band that practices in a couple houses down the street.
