"Outside the vocal booth" tone?

I wanna mix a vocal shout so it sounds like you're outside the vocal booth (with door open) and you're listening.

Best example is marker 2:12 in "Billie Jean" where MJ yells "Don't think twice... WOOO!!!!"

What plugin chain should I use?

First and foremost, it's "DO think twice," not "Don't" !!!

Anyway, just open the door to the vocal room, go outside the room, and hit record.

haha, I never knew that!

but it's too late, vocals are already recorded. how best to approximate that sound with mixing?

I'm trying a combo of bandpass EQ and slapback delay...

That's a good start. Mess around with some room reverbs, and try a low pass filter (cut highs) if you wanna simulate being on the other side of a wall.

You might be able to get something close with the Speakerphone plug in.

Does that really sound to you like being in the room next to it???

But if you say so, the main spatial effect is the vocal to one side and the slap delay centered or panned to the other side. Also if you low pass it gets the feeling of being in the other room but I'm not hearing that on Michael's vocals.

Record the voice playing through the monitors in your room, with the mic place with enough distance from the speakers to get some room sound. Should at least sound.. hm interesting.
