What to do without recording eqiupment

So I'm completely new audio engineering(going to school for it now).

Anyway, I've heard good things about Reaper, and it was free. So I downloaded it.

My question is, is there anything to do in the program without any equipment to record?? Besides an old crappy rock band mic??

look up free loops/samples online and then download a ton of them. then import them into reaper to start to learn arranging and mixing

or youtube reaper virtual instruments
MIDI, Instruments and Plugins - Reaper 103 - macProVideo.com

and you could always practice recording your voice. im not familiar with the rock band stuff, and since playstation decided to go the "music" rout i refused to look into any of the rock band ****. no offense.

There is a website with a bunch of songs that you can practice mixing. So you can work on your mixing and mastering skills for a long time without actually recording anything. The 'Mixing Secrets' Free Multitrack Download Library (Cambridge Music Technology) And good choice going with Reaper. It is an excellent program once you start to learn it. Also has a great forum with lots of stuff to help you out.

You can also do searches for remix stems. Some bands, like Nine Inch Nails regularly post stems for fans to play with. Additionally, remix contests are all the rage these days, for bands of just about any genre. Just search "remix contest". Finally, a lot of Indy bands post stems just for fun.

In addition to free loops online there are tons of resources out there. Also search for free sounds for sound effects. Most are free for attribution. And there are thousands of free vst
Instruments and effects for free download. Not to mention, almost all software companies offer demo periods on their stuff.

Get cracking, it's all there for you!

You go to school, but they didn't give you any DAWs?

Get raw tracks to practice editing, mixing and such.
Shaking Through : Stems
Then go find some bands and record them. That's the route I would have gone before I was a gearslut. Now I have a day job to support my habit.

I would learn ALL the shortcuts. while practicing editing audio..chopping..splicing...mixing rendering etc etc.

just get really comfortable with the interface..and you might be able to make some creative things at the same time.
