Why do Studio Monitors roll off sub-bass?

If the aim of studio monitors is to represent the music accurately, then why do nearly all studio monitors roll off the sub-bass?

Lives for gear

Because low, powerful bass generally requires large, expensive drivers and enclosures. There are plenty out there for you to buy if you can afford them.

The general design of smaller nearfield monitors is limited in low bass response by the driver size. Bass can be extended by sacrificing low frequency flatness. Getting flat response to 50 Hz or slightly below with a 5 inch or 6 inch bass driver usually takes some LF equalization. Pushing for a more extended LF response would require losing efficiency at higher mid-bass frequencies. Its basic speaker design physics.

Trying to make a limited throw 6 inch monitor produce reasonable audio mix levels at 25 Hz would result in severe harmonic distortion and no real bass power. No low bass is always better than distorted harmonics. Unless you're recording a pipe organ, orchestral bass drum, or purely electronic music with very low frequency components, there is not much need for reproducing anything below 40 Hz anyway.

Larger, usually 3-way monitors are available with response that extends down to the mid to high 20 Hz range. That extra octave of flat bass comes at the expense of size and cost. Those larger monitors also are not well suited for near-filed monitoring, and are usually floor or soffit mounted at distances that are too large for home studio use.
