The best (vocal) pre amp for your $$buck$$

[/CENTER]
I'M LOOKING INTO GETTING A MIC PRE AMP. BUT I DONT KNOW WITCH ONE TO GET...???
I'M LOOKING FOR THAT NICE COLORFUL WARMTH SOUND. I WOULD MAINLY BE USING IT FOR R&B VOCALS AND A LIL POP.

I WAS LOOKING INTO GETTING THE "PRESONUS CHANNEL STRIP PRE" BUT IS IT GOING TO GIVE ME THAT WARMTH IM LOOKING FOR???
ARE THOSE FEATURES NECESSARY?(EQ.COMP.)?

WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST PRE-AMP ON A $300 BUDGET?

THANKS,

One of those Art Tube pres for $29 - 75% of replies on this very forum preferred it over a Great River or something of that vein

for 4 years I recorded everything through an original Art Tube MP. Used an AT4050 condensor - then as I learned more I was horrified I didn't start with a better mic pre..but really, it wasn't sooo bad.

In these days, you'll be spending thousands of dollars for a great mic pre, so it doesn't bother me to suggest something 500 dollars or less.

Gracem101 - Transparent
Golden Age Pre - Colored

I used an ART MPA Pro and an Audio Technica AT 4050 for years. You can get both used really cheap on Ebay.

Not true. If ever thats the case, its after a ART preamp was modified, and not the $29 one either.

M-Audio DMP3 is often sited as a real bang-for-your-buck preamp. I used it for a while on everything and loved it. Did end up selling it though to reduce clutter in the studio. But I occasionally toy with buying one again. It's definitely a clean preamp, not a color maker.

If you want a real sonic signature put on your signal, look at the ART MPA Pro II. I had an ART MPA Gold. I loved it on some things, and hated it on others. But listening back to the recordings I did with it, I like it more in retrospect than I thought I did at the time. Yup, I sold that one off as well, but occasionally think of getting another one.
