Expand inputs via Scarlett Octopre or Mixer

Hey guys I have a RME Fireface UFx which I use to record external instruments and effects in my DAW but with time the amount of i/o are not enough.
I've done some research regarding the Scarlett Octopre and 24-channel mixers... but have my doubts.

How is quality of the Octopre for recording external synthesizers?

Would it be better to get a mixer instead of the Octopre so then I connect all external instruments/send effects to the mixer directly that would allow me also to mix or I still need the Octopre via ADAT to the RME and afterwards all to the mixer? I'm not sure if the mixer would replace the Octopre or if I still need both together.

Sorry but I'm quite new to this topic as before I always had enough inputs in my soundcard to record everything and I would just mix in the DAW as my level was quite more basic. I'm still learning of course, but now taking my tracks to a more professional level. That's why at some point during the year I would think in upgrading and getting a mixer.

Would ge great to get some advice or of the best ways to expand my inputs if anybody could help?
